This morning I did a fairly comprehensive test of my new a5100 with both the kit lens (16-55), and the fixed lens (20mm) I bought along with the camera kit.

I learned a number of things (including that the 20mm was not an OSS lens), but what concerned me most is that the kit lens would not return to its collapsed configuration when turning off the camera.  In fact after turning off the camera (and the lens not collapsing) the camerea refused to "recognize the lens" (with an error message to that effect) afterwards.  The lens will not collapse.  I removed the lens (since in this condition it is worthless) and decided to let B&H know of the situation.

Expecting that they would want to have me return the entire camera (since it is a kit), I decided to ask the experts here about this situation.  Is it a common failure?  Is there something obvious that I should be doing? (I haven't even consulted the troubleshooting in the manual yet.)  I have removed the lens and reseated it to ensure that the contacts weren't grossly out of alignment - I did that at least twice - but without change.

Anybody have any good ideas?

--- edit ---

Learning happens fast.  ...So I consulted the Troublshooting sections of one of the doc's I downloaded from Sony's page and couldn't find an exact match for the situation, but there was one under "other" that said "product does not work properly" (a catch-all obviously).  It didn't say a whole lot, but it did suggest removing the battery.  I hadn't tried that so that is what I did, and voila, when reinstalling the (expanded) lens and the battery, and turning the camera back on, the lens did exactly what it was supposed to do.  Everything is copasetic now.  Just know that if all else obvious fails, try pulling the battery.
