Can't Choose Any Focus Modes (New to Alpha w/ an A6000)

Featured Replies

Hi all. Just figuring out my new A6000 for the first time. I can't adjust any focus modes, and wondering if anyone has thoughts. Probably something obvious as I am just learning the camera.

When I click "Fn" to get to focus mode, while in "M" (manual), the camera is in "Shoot Mode" as in the attached photo. However, if I turn the dial to select something else, the screen immediately tells me "This function is currently disabled." So, in short, I can't seem to adjust any focus modes.

Any help is appreciated, and thank you!

As per the photo, you have selected the Shoot Mode selection on the Function Menu (Fn) which shows you are in Manual Mode, as opposed to Aperture Priority or any of the other Shooting Modes. You need to navigate to the Focus Mode portion of the Fn menu to be able to set different Focus Modes.

Have a look on YouTube for some guides on how to use your camera.

Is this actually a 'new' A6000, or a 'new to you' (used) A6000? If used, please start by doing a factory reset. You have no way of knowing what weird settings a previous owner may have programmed. There is a way in these cameras to disable items in the Fn menu, it could be set that way.

Also, try accessing the focus mode via the menu instead of the Fn button. It could be that there's a limitation due to a choice made in the menu.

Factor reset worked! And was something I should have done anyway on this used camera, so helpful all-around. Thanks for fielding the basic question, all.

I can't even begin to tell you how many times that's the answer. Besides fixing the problem, you now have a clean slate from which to start your own setup.
