AF with macro extension tubes

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I just bought a set of Meike macro extension tubes for my Alpha 6300. They work fine, with one exception: The AF confirms correct focus (green AF field) even when the display shows that the subject is strongly blurred. Without the macro tubes, the AF is fine. It seems (but I didn't check this thoroughly) that the AF with macro tubes works a bit more reliable with shorter focal length.

I didn't have this problem with my (now sold) Canon equipment.

Did somebody else stumble upon this problem?

Thanks, Robert

Macro, at the level that tubes provides,

is a strictly MF deal. Even if the AF was

accurate, deploying it to get focus where

you want it would be hellish compared to

simply using MF [with the MF magnifier

where needed]. MF is faster than AF for

really close focus work, even if using a

native brand true macro lens.

Thanks for your reply!

I often read that users prefer MF for macro.

I never could fully agree, since in the past and with my Canon equipment, I had very good results when using AF macro tubes. With my 760D as well as with my M6. I just expected it to be the same with Sony.

Is there perhaps some technical issue with the Sony focus system making the use of AF macro tubes more problematic?

Same issue with Kenko extension tubes. Autofocus is not really working for practical purposes. So the main benefit of the electronic coupling would be aperture control and EXIF data. Focusing has to be done mostly manually.

I know it works better on other brands so, yes, it must be a problem that stems from Sony's sensor design or algorithms.

Maybe the Sony sensor, but .....

Like yourself, I have SLRs that WILL autofocus in macro,

that is to say it can be demonstrated that technically the

AF is functioning as designed. But in a practical sense, I

have always found that steering the AF target points to

the desired part of the image is more tedious than just

focusing the image as seen in the finder. And acoarst MF

is easier in live view cameras [or LV mode in SLRs] than

trying to MF with the SLR's optical viewing system, cuz

the optical SLR finder has no MF magnifier, and a lousy

"focusing" screen ... better referred to only as a viewing

screen. I did put a real focusing screen in a Canon SLR,

and altho it helps somewhat, it's not like the old focusing

screens of the pre-AF era. Before AF, you couldn't sell a

camera that defied the user's attempts to focus it !
