Shot. Result. Preview not working on A7iii

Recommended Posts

Hi,

this is my first post on this forum and English isnt my first language so please be gentle

I made the switch from Nikon to Sony. One of the key features that attracted me towards Sony was the EVF and the resulting "What you see is what you get" in the live view.

My gear:

A7iii + Godox V860ii S or Xpro S both as masters. (Several GM and G lenses)

My problem:

As soon as I attach and turn on my flash unit or trigger, the camera overrides the "setting effects ON". That means I no longer get a real representation of the ambient exposure but a "simulated" exposure in the viewfinder. I get that they do that in order to be able to still see something when using strobes in very dark environments, but I am wedding photographer and mostly use my Flash as a fill or for creative effects. I would love to still be able to see just the ambient exposure so that I can expose for that and add the fill flash.

I`ve read on several sites that to overcome that "problem" some people use the Shot Result Preview mapped to a custom button. That would be a nice workaround but in my case IN DOESNT WORK. All it changes is a tiny bit of exposure if I really increase F-stop numbers. But when I compare the resulting exposure using this function to the exposure resulting in turning the flash off (or with the picture taken), it doesnt match at all. Also, Shutterspeed and ISO changes dont influence the exposure using Shot Result Preview.

My question:

Does anyone experience the same problem with their A7iii?

Is there a setting I have missed which interferes maybe?

Is there a known issue or bug with the A7iii?

Just migrated to Sony A7iii from Nikon.

Gears: Sony A7iii + GM Lenses + Godox Xpro S + v350s + ad200

As a wedding photographer this is very frustrating. Tried mapping the Shot Result Preview as many suggested and not seeing any differences in the exposure. This really defeats the purpose of the “Setting Effects On.”

Can we get some help from the community please.

Why not just take a test frame ?

That way you'll even get to see

the effect of the fill flash, etc.

It's easy, cheap, and no messy

toxic polaroid trash to discard :-)

I dont understand what you are saying? Whats the point in doing that? It would take shots to nail the exposure and the EVF would be useless.

ok guys, I narrowed down the bug causing the issue after trying every possible combination. Try turning OFF Antiflicker (Menue 1 Page14). Also, if you turn silent shooting on and off again you have turn off and turn on the flash or camera again for it to apply settings effect on. Also you wont be able to autofocus while holding down Shot. result preview.

Think about it. You are asking for the EVF to do the same thing as the OVF did on your Nikon.

The EVF won't change the fact that you'll need tests shots to check your settings.

No, its the other way around. I am asking the EVF to do the same thing its always doing and to not change when a flash is attached. Please reread my post.

I almost never use flash, but I recall I would just turn off the flash momentarily, evaluate the ambient exposure, adjust, and then start the flash up again.  However test shots were still in order to judge the overall balance of ambient and fill.

Nah, you're asking for the EVF to show ambient light which is what the OVF does.

The thought of having real time WYSIWYG for flash photography without triggering the flash in a test shot is flawed.

NO, I want it to IGNORE the flash. I want it to NOT take into account the flash for anything. If you pick up a a7iii the first day and look through the EVF what do you see? You see the ambient exposure (if you have setting effects on enabled). I want to do the exact same thing when a flash is attached but the camera is ignoring "settings effect on" when the anti flicker option is set to on.

I couldn't get the EVF to display the ambient exposure with flash on and flicker option off.  To my mind, the simplest solution is to press the power button on the flash to off, check EVF, press the power button on.  Just a simple button press to achieve what you want.

Unfortunately there is no proper fix for this. The only work around is to turn the anti-flicker off and then you can use the shot preview to give you the ambient exposure but you cannot use auto focus or change ss/aperture while holding the assigned shot preview button. It's better than nothing.

One possible solution (if you shoot manual flash) is to shoot with a Canon version of your flash.  (I sometimes use my Canon godox on the sony a7iii).  You then will be able to toggle between Live View Setting: SETTING EFFECT ON which allows you to only see ambient light WITH the flash on.  This is useful if you have enough ambient to see through the viewfinder.  Then you can toggle to SETTING EFFECT OFF when you want the EVF to brighten up and give you night vision.

No need for "SHOT RESULT PREVIEW"

Hope that helps

Basically I need immediate access to video files on the computer as soon as they are shot on the camera.
I have a video capture card but it is limited to 60 FPS and I haven't found one that goes any higher. Furthermore, I'm believe that the a7iii can't output higher than 60fps via hdmi anyway.
Anyone know a reasonable way to get videos from camera to computer for immediate accessibility without removing the SD Card or sending via wireless?
Maybe a tethering utility that allows video transfer? I have Sony remote/edit/viewer bundle but that doesn't allow video transfer.

Hello, I just turned in my camera to service. I was taking photos and some where coming out over exposed when correctly exposing. And over 2000 shutter I could see the curtain or shutter at the corners as shadows or black areas. At 5000 speed and over the photos where completely black sometimes
So after handing to service they sent me a picture and said out of waranty because I may have caused it. Such as taking a photo while cleaning sensor.
I haven't even put my figures in to that gap before. And never cleaned the sensor.
      Here is the photo.
      What may have caused it.
I am shocked when I saw it. No one else have used my camera too. I will test my camera before reparing it to see if I still get the same result when taking a photo. This way I will be sure that if the service has caused it...

Has anyone else updated their iPad to the newest public beta of iPadOS and is having trouble importing photos in the Photo app or viewing photos in the files app. I shoot with an a7iii and connect my SD card using the Apple USB-C to SD card adapter.
