First picture with new A7iii has shutter count of 2

Recommended Posts

Using exiftool to verify the shutter count of my new A7iii, it reports a value of 2 for the very first image I took. (See below.) Has this been anyone else's experience? Is this due to a test shot being taken at the factory before packaging? Something else?

C:\Temp\a7iii>exiftool.exe DSC00001.JPG | grep -i count
Image Count : 2
Image Count 2 : 2
Image Count 3 : 2

C:\Temp\a7iii>exiftool.exe DSC00215.JPG | grep -i count
Image Count : 216
Image Count 2 : 216
Image Count 3 : 216

Just seems odd. This is my first Sony, but every Nikon I've ever purchased new has started with a shutter count of 1.

I should also note that my A7iii arrived with the shutter open (sensor exposed), but I've seen reports from others that say the shutter was initially closed when they received theirs.

Return it.

Assuming your're not joking . . . I'm not sure it warrants a return. Everything seems to be working fine, and I really love the performance. I would like to know if others have seen the same thing with their A7iii shutter counts.

Do you have the Electronic First Curtain Shutter on or off?

If off, the shutter fires twice for each shot - Once to reset the sensor, and once again to end the shot.

If on, the shutter fires once for each shot - The sensor is electronically reset to begin the shot, and only closes to end the shot.

If you're in silent mode, the shutter doesn't fire at all.

Thanks for responding. My e-Front Curton Shut. is set to On. Note that in my initial post I included the shutter count for file DSC00215.JPG as well as for file DSC00001.JPG to try to show that the shutter count (at least through the first 215 shots) was incrementing by one for each shot. Anyway, very interesting about Silent Mode not affecting shutter count. Thanks for that info. I will keep it in mind.

Hi,

The exif data from my first pic also showed a shutter count of 2. I thought this was very odd at first, but now glad someone else has experienced this also, puts my mind at rest...slightly...

Thanks for letting me know.

Don't you have more important things to worry about?  I would just assume that Sony fired off a single test shot...then I would move on.

Yes, I do have more important things to worry about. But I can worry about several things at once, each with different levels of importance. This just happens to be one of those things. (Or was.)

And if you read my initial post, you'll see that I do suggest a possible explanation being a test shot taken at the factory. Anyway, I was simply posting to find out if [1] anyone else had a similar experience, and [2] if anyone knew (without having to "assume") why the shutter count started at "2".

No need to condescend just because I'm not as cool as you. I'm just trying to learn. And while I don't believe the old adage that "there are no stupid questions," I'm also not adverse to risk asking one (or many) if it gets me closer to finding out what I'd like to know.
