Incorrect lens info in EXIF a **few** times

Recommended Posts

Using an a6500 with an 18-105G zoom (with lens firmware version 0.4) and just noticed that in a very small number of jpegs (26 out of 569), the lens info in the EXIF data is incorrect.

Here is what it looks like when it's wrong [A6K01083.JPG]:

Lens Type : E-Mount, T-Mount, Other Lens or no lens

Lens Spec : Unknown (01 0 1 0 0 00)

Lens Mount 2 : Unknown (172)

Lens Type 3 : Unknown (31475)

Lens E-mount Version : f2.ac

Lens Firmware Version : Ver.51.243

Lens Mount : Unknown

Lens Format : Unknown

Lens Spec Features :

Lens ID : Sony E 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 OSS or Sony E 16-70mm F4 ZA OSS or Sony FE 24-70mm F4 ZA OSS or Sony E 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 OSS LE or Sony E PZ 18-105mm F4 G OSS or Sony FE 24-105mm F4 G OSS or Sony E PZ 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 OSS or Sony FE 16-35mm F4 ZA OSS or Sony FE PZ 28-135mm F4 G OSS or Sony E PZ 18-110mm F4 G OSS or Sony E 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 OSS or Tamron 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 Di III VC

But in the vast majority of cases this info is correct and looks like [A6K01140.JPG]:

Lens Type : E-Mount, T-Mount, Other Lens or no lens

Lens Spec : E PZ 18-105mm F4 G OSS

Lens Mount 2 : E-mount

Lens Type 3 : Sony E PZ 18-105mm F4 G OSS

Lens E-mount Version : 1.41

Lens Firmware Version : Ver.04.003

Lens Mount : E-mount

Lens Format : APS-C

Lens Type 2 : Sony E PZ 18-105mm F4 G OSS

Lens Spec Features : E PZ G OSS

Lens Info : 18-105mm f/4

Lens Model : E PZ 18-105mm F4 G OSS

Lens ID : Sony E PZ 18-105mm F4 G OSS

I'm using exiftool version 10.8 https://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/ to extract this info and it's correct in all but 26 out of 569 JPG. Has anyone run into this and know why this might happen?

The JPG themselves look fine (this lens has a lot of uncorrected pin cushion distortion which is corrected in-camera with a lens profile, so I think the camera knows which lens is being used).

Dirty contacts, handling camera so as to stress

the lens mount, sloppy lens latch or accidentally

pressing latch button .... etc

Or mebbe the lens is defective.

Or mebbe it's your exif reader. When you see a

wacko exif readout, try simply reading the exif

via the file properties option in your file browser.

It might read correctly there, but incorrectly in

your other software.
