FE 24-105mm f/4 Exposure Inconsistency

Recommended Posts

I took my new FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS for a test run, and in the course of using it on two different bodies (in this case, the A6500), noticed that there is a sporadic drop in exposure value by about 1/3 stop every 8 or 9 frames.

A couple days later I shot another series with the A7RIII body, and came up with the same result. It occurs whether on single shot mode or multi shot mode, and in all cases, I haven’t changed any of the exposure settings from one frame to the next.

Any thoughts on why this is happening and what can be done to correct it?

Exposure settings unchanged. If you confirm that in the image meta-data; the same shutter speed, ISO and aperture for each image; then it could be a fault with the lens. However, also check the exposure-compensation in the meta-data too, as it is sometimes possible to adjust that by mistake.

The auburn lady in the link is green. Moreover the photo is a

bit flat and washed out so you did something funny to it.

I don't understand why you post such awful photos to prove

your points. If you're going to fight everyone, you shouldn't

expose your own weakness.

Becuz it draws such sage advice !

OTOH here's your green lady, oh maestro of the Color

Monkey, with the saturation madly jacked up, to make

sure the any faint colors have nowhere to hide:

I'm still looking for the green in her face ..... mebbe if I try

jacking up just the green channel:

Jeez, 100% max saturation on the green channel and I'm

still not seeing the green in that face .......

.............

I don't understand why you post such awful photos ........

Thaz believable, since you actually understand

almost nothing. I will concede that you've never

posted a flawed photo at least none as far back

as the forum archive goes. Acoarst, thaz easy

enuf for you, cuz you never post any photos at

all, Mister Expert Judge of All Things Photo.

Fact is, much of your advice over time is flawed

by both your misguided imagination of your skill

level .... and by your frequent misreading of the

problems that users post.

Well, he knows stuff too but often can't resist the urge to mess with people.

Anyway, most of my posts above were relating to the use of a grey card as a mean to lock exposure and white balance. That related directly to OP's question about varying exposure in a series of images.

I'm sorry I got side-tracked at the end.

Well OK. Back on topic ... The OP shows a process of elimination.

Other lenses behave well on both bodies. The 24-105 occasionally

varies exposure on both bodies. Well ... thaz a hardware problem.

It doesn't matter if he uses a gray card, a spot meter, or voices in

his head for determining exposure. The lens is faulty, and those

who lecture him on metering technique have NOT shown that they

really read the description of the problem.

He doesn't need any lengthy lectures on metering, he needs a box

and a pre-paid shipping label.

Respondents fail to really read the OP, go off crazy tangents, and

thus they they INVITE getting "messed with". Forums can be both

informative AND fun :-)

Just how do I get my incident meter and/or

my gray card to show me preview images

and/or histograms ?

Please explain the magic procedure in very

plain language, cuz I have tried, over and

over, to accomplish this, but the old tools

refuse to cooperate, and having used them

for 50 years, they are now gathering dust

and headed for the dumpster :-(

AND, FWIW .....

Seems that no one can answer this !

Run off on pointless tangets ? They

surely do. But answer it ? Just try !

Perfick exzample of what I've been

talking about. Anyone wants to call

that "messing with people" acoarst

is also encouraged to describe how

to clear that teenzy little technical

hurdle.
