SELP18200 question

The manual says:

"Slide the lever slightly to zoom slowly and slide it fully to zoom quickly."

I tried this in a store on an a6500 and couldn't get it to work. I called Sony and they were stumped, except to say that maybe I tried a bad copy. (It was an authorized dealer, fwiw. I've bought 3 Sony lenses from them, and they were all perfect.)

Some more googling led me to the NEX-FS700R handbook which says, under the part about the included SELP18200  lens:

"...the powered zoom boasts a choice of six speeds for smooth fixed-speed zoom operation"

That suggests the zoom lever offers 2 speeds for each of the 3 settings, H-M-L.

Can anyone with this lens and a recent alpha camera like the a6500 or a6300 confirm that it's indeed possible to vary the speed of the zoom by how far you move the lever (like on the SELP18105G)? Are there any menu settings that enable/disable it?
