Full set of Contax G Lenses - any good with A6500?

Hi,

 

Just joined, done some searches and cannot see anything specific which will help me, reaching out to members using Contax Glass.

 

I have had a Contax G2 kit for 15 years now, gathering dust these last few years, all lenses are:

 

Contax 45mm f2

Contax 28mm f2.8

Contax 90mm f2.8

 

I have seen a lot of forums, and images from Contax glass mounted onto the Sony Alpha range over the years. I am now looking to purchase a Sony A6500 back here in UK so I can use my lenses on this body.

 

Does anyone have experience on this here and what adapters have you used, is this a good use of my legacy lenses?

 

Any links to forum posts would be great or your experiences using the above would be really helpful.

I'd rather put a a7-II behind those FF lenses 

but there's no real problem except that you'll 

prolly wind up wanting one more lens, wider 

than the 28 which is more normal than wide 

on the a6500.  Thaz why I'd prefer the a7-II.  

  

The a7-II costs just slightly more than a6500,  

body-only. But if you later want one, or more,  

full featured Sony FE lenses, lenses for that  

larger sensor are distinctly more costly :-(

Hi, thanks for the reply, sorry I had not been back in a while. But I am now looking at the A6500 due to a £300 Cashback offer this month from Sony in the UK if I buy the A6500 ;-) What would be the best adaptor for these lenses and A6500, Metabones or Techart?

 

I want to shoot stills and video later this month, so looking to get the whole set up next week.

It'll work fine but the question is if the cost of the camera is proportional to the use of these lenses. One alternative could be to buy a cheaper E-mount camera without the bells and whistles you won't be able to use with adapted legacy lenses.

You could get an a6000 ... but vs the 6500 you'd lose the silent 

mode. and the IBIS. Or an a6300 if you need silent mode. but

don't need IBIS. There's basically no huge differences in all three

a6XXX cameras when using those lenses ... unless you consider 

IBIS to be huge. 

   

Myself, I do consider IBIS huge, but for the the price of an a6500

I've  chosen the a7-II cuz I have many vintage FF lenses. I might 

pick up an a6500 when the a6700 affects the a6500's price :-)

I am using the lenses as they are still superb optically and already have them with a G2 body. It made sense to choose a Sony Alpha body which can accept them, without going too far down the £1000's with an A7RIII. If anyone has any suggestions on the two adaptors I mentioned? Will both give full AF in video and still?

 

I am still swaying to the A6500, although will I have to modify the fins on the back of the 28mm to fit straight on this body?

I had the Contax-G specific Techart adapter together with the 45 and 90mm. It's quite precise under good light, but is noisy and slow compared to any native lens and fails under low light. 

Don't get me wrong, it's a impressive feat to adapt this to a camera of today, but the focusing mechanism is a few decades old.

 

Even being a Zeiss Contax fan, sold the whole lot and went for native lenses. They are so fast and quiet, I didn't regret it at all.
