Can't shoot JPEG - Manual Mode

Recommended Posts

I recently bought the sony a7RII camera and when I shoot in Manual mode but with JPEG quality I get an image that looks animated (attached example).

Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong or why this is happening?

Thanks

Sure does look like an effect.

But it shouldn't be limited to only Manual mode.

The green PhD [push here dummy] mode might

cancel the effect, but if you DO have an effect

enabled, it would also show up in the A,S and P

modes .... looking a bit different depending on

how bright or dark you and the mode render the

scene. The example is over exposed. A, P or S

mode at about "+1.5" would look about the way

the example looks.

What tinplater said.

You have downloaded/installed the Picture Effect+ app and are in running the "Illustration" effect. You probably see the "Illus" icon on your rear screen.

Hit the Menu button and exit the app.

Played around with it one afternoon last summer:

Thanks for the reply.

Do you mean downloaded the effect onto the camera? sorry but I don't quite understand what you mean. How could I have downloaded the Picture Effect? also where would I have downloaded it from? it would be helpful if you could please explain in more detail.

In reply to the other comments, picture effect is definitely set to off.

Thanks

The effect is included (with other effects) in the Picture Effect+ app available on the Sony PlayMemories applications page: https://www.playmemoriescameraapps.com/portal/

Did you not install this app on your camera? If not, did you buy the camera new or was it used or an open box?

If the Picture Effect+ app is in fact running, when you press the Menu button you would see Exit App as the first option. Press Menu and tell us what you see.

If you don't see Exit app then I'm at a loss to explain what is going on. The only suggestion I have left would be to remove the memory card and reset the camera to factory default settings: http://helpguide.sony.net/ilc/1640/v1/en/contents/TP0001117097.html

Beats me what's with the talk about an app.

Nothing is downloaded to my new-in-box

acquired Sony that has a suite of Creative

effects including one that looks like this ...

or maybe it's a version of the HDR. Either

way, I've tried it and it looks like the photo

in the OP.

If indeed it's a version of HDR that caused

the sample photo, then Creative Effects

being OFF won't cancel it. You hafta quit

the HDR. Also, I hope the thread author is

not confusing Picture Effect and Creative

Effect and/or Effect Preview. Honestly I'm

not all that familiar with the exact names of

features I don't need, but I did experiment

with my camera and the Effect in the OP

does NOT require a downloaded app !

And when you shot Automatic mode with JPEG quality everything is OK?

Looks to me like lots of out-of-focus (large aperture, i.e. small f-number) which has been over sharpened to cause a 'halo' on edges (JPEG settings).

Well this is Picture Effect Illustration, version

thaz built-in, never edited, not an added app:

The third one, being a bit over exposed, is

lot like the sample image in the OP.

Looks to me like lots of out-of-focus (large aperture, i.e. small f-number) which

It does look kinda that way .... until you edit it. Once the tonality is

brought close to normal there are telltale black outlines that do not

result from overexposure-plus-oversharpening. Oversharpening

adds bright white lines. This definitely looks like the Picture Effect

"Illustration", but set to a low level [i keep mine on "High"].

Look at the framed pictures in the scene, and at the dark gray

unfocused rectangles and phone [?] a bit to the left of the framed

pictures. Those black outlines are the opposite of what happens

with oversharpening.

Picture Effect is definitely enabled. If indeed it's not available to be

disengaged via the menu, then there is a defect in the device or in

its firmware. Resetting the whole camera is not a bad idea ... if the

camera is almost new. If it's been in use a while, losing all personal

settings is a PITA. OTOH if the owner cannot find the Picture Effect

controls and also thinks this happens only in manual mode, then it's

very likely many other personal settings are kinda cockeyed as well,

and thus a reset loses nothing of value and provides a clean slate :-)

You can see the white edge lines of oversharpening here:

Username,

This thread feels like going down a rabbit hole (you know, Alice, White Rabbit, yadda)

According to the exif data the two guitar shots were from an A6000 and the bookshelf shot from an A7M2.

I'm heading to a local shop to buy ink in the next few days. They have A6000, 6300 and 6500 bodies in stock as well as the A7's.

Please tell me your "out of the box" steps for the A6000 and A7M2 to get the Illustration effect in detail (ie. settings and options selected).

When I purchased my A7M2 there was no "Effects" available, just creative styles. Two different things. I had to consciously load the effects app.

Although I have better things to do I'll test the cameras in shop to see if as you say the effects are pre loaded.

Oops. Only the a6000 was new-in-box. It has both

Creative Effect [vivid, neutral, etc etc] and Picture

Effect [miniature, illustration, etc etc.].

I've always assumed that my USED a7-II would be

as fully featured as my BRAND NEW a6000. So, it

IS possible that the prior owner loaded an app. Now,

FWIW, I do NOT go into any "apps" zone to use the

Picture Effects on my a7-II. It's in the menus, same

as everything else on the camera.

Reading page 37 of the PDF manual for the a7-II,

Picture Effects [including "Illustration"] are a normal

feature of the camera. Acoarst the OP refers to an

a7R-II ... but why would Sony remove the feature ?

Checking Sony's HTML version of the Help Guide of

the a7R-II, this page  ...

http://helpguide.sony.net/ilc/1520/v1/en/contents/TP0000818700.html

indicates that the a7R-II also has the Picture Effects

feature the same as the basic a7-II. No downloaded

apps, no voodoo.

I replied in detail anyway, cuz this is not your private message

box, nor are you the thread author. Info here is for whomever

may find it beneficial, entertaining, irritating, whatever. I would

encourage you  to enter my ID into your ignore list.

Thanks for all the replies!

I now managed to understand what was the problem - I was looking in the Picture Effects mode while in RAW quality and it it said 'off' but when I eventually check it in jpeg mode it was in 'illustration mid'. That is a confusing setup but at least now it's clear where I was going wrong.

Sony is like that. You can't change/alter/modify a

parameter that applies to some feature that is not

available for use at the moment. Frinstintz, you

can't change anything about your AF operations

while you happen to be in MF at the moment.
