Remote for self-portrait

Recommended Posts

Is there a remote which engages the auto-focus?  Using the 2/10 second delay seems simply to trip the shutter at whatever the focus is set at.  I'm trying to get sharp images for a self portrait, but can't get the autofocus to lock on me once I walk from the camera to my sitting position.  Open to IR/wifi/wired solutions

Yes. There is a WiFi iPhone/android app (free I think from Sony), and a USB trigger which replicates the action of the shutter (i.e. makes an autofocus).

Depending on the camera, you might also be able to get C-AF to somehow track you so that when the shutter fires you are pretty much in focus.

Phone + App is probably the best option.

The Sony RMT-DSLR2 will engage autofocus if it is enabled on the camera. It's infrared so you don't have to enable wifi on your camera, which saves a lot of battery.

I am using the RMT-VP1K.  It is a IR remote with shutter lock option. The receiver is connected to the camera port and the IR receive unit can either be put on the hotshoe or fixed via included clip to tripod or whatever.

I found much better then the RMT-DSLR2, which sometimes has difficulties to be received when using big lenses or having inconvenient angle for sending the signal.
