revolver4711
Hi, I have a new A7M2. I purchased a 18 year old Leica 35-70mm F4 Macro/Zoom lens. My question is, I will use this for traveling, generally street shots. I know that I should manually adjust the IBIS to the exact lens size, but at any given point that could change from a 35MM through to 70mm. I would rather not continually adjust the IBIS. What would be the difference or problem if I left it set at 70MM verses 35MM or maybe 50MM? I have searched for an answer, but have found nothing close to answering this question. Thank you,
Advertisement Posted February 13, 2017 Posted February 13, 2017 Hi revolver4711, Take a look here 5-axis stabilization. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Dr. Harout
You will get blurry images. You have to set the exact focal length.

Thank you, Why don't you just try it for each setting and see if you can notice a difference? Then you can answer the question yourself, and feel awesome about it Don't forget to share your findings ...
Guest all8
Oh, and see if you can assign the settings to the Memory positions, because that could be an easy way to manage the change.
Username
If you set the FL too high the IBIS will over react ... moving to much and almost guaranteeing some degree of blur. It is safe to set the shortest FL of the zoom range. You will get the full benefit at the short end of the zoom and a reduced benefit as you lengthen the FL without readjusting the IBIS setting. There would be some benefit but less and less as you zoom out. If you have a steady hand, the lesser effect is still helping out a bit. At least it won't introduce extra blur actually caused by the IBIS action. It's when you set the FL too long/high then you would get extra blur, caused not by your hand tremors but by the excessive travel of the IBIS mechanical action. So: 1. Exact FL setting is ideal. 2. Too short/low FL setting is safe, but reduces IBIS benefit. 3. Too long/high FL setting is not safe, introduces added blur. Basically, using a non-FL-communicating zoom is tedious but still more convenient than carrying more lenses, and it keeps the sensor cleaner than swapping lenses all the time. You hafta remember to set FL all the time. OTOH, if you're always juggling lenses, lens caps, and fighting dust [cuz you swap lenses] all that juggling is verrrrry likely to distract from remembering to reset the FL for the IBIS. So, zooming is not less convenient than it used to be [pre-IBIS], but IBIS is less convenient when not using an FL-communicating lens.
