nope sorry to tell you the only way is in the menu option , I keep hoping there will be a update to allow this but nothing has come.

I shoot a lot from the waist or waist height on a tripod every day and just have the viewfinder turned off

Hi, Guys.

Is it possible to assign view options to a Fn button?

When on Auto and shooting at a waist level the viewfinder sensor turns the LCD off.

I'd like to be able to switch quickly by pressing a designated button rather than going into the menu labyrinth.

Thank you.

yes but not to a FN which was the OP's question.

I'm sure the OP would happily assign it to C3, or any

other button if allowed. We ALL want that toggle, but

most Sonys don't offer it. The a7R-II finally makes it

available ... but until new models or new firmware are

offered, this benefit is only for a7R-II users.

FWIW, it's also available on the a3000 and not simply

available but mandatory. The a3000 has no automatic

EVF-to-monitor switching. You ALWAY hafta push the

switching button ... and I find it's no problem at all. It's

better than the arrangement on ANY digital SLR. It is

the BEST feature on the a3000 [which has verrry few

features anywho].

Going back and forth to a button trigger would drive me mad.

I can see how many users would agree, but that is

exactly what the OP asks about how to accomplish.

And it is maddening that Sony limited it to just one

model, and a somewhat specialized model at that.

Routine photography doesn't need double the MP

[at double the price] :-(

Hi synthesar; I don't know what camera you have so I assume you have a Sony A7r2 because that is what I have.

I shoot a lot from waist level and my problem WAS that the viewfinder sensor turned the LCD off when I held the camera too close to my white shirt. That was annoying, and even more annoying was that it took so long to get the LCD turned on again, and also that I had to move the camera away from my tummy to get the LCD switched on. Felt like the whole operation took at least a minute. And I lost picture opportunities. I assume that that is your problem.

There is an easy solution. VTC wrote about it above: " place a layer of translucent tape over the emitter diode beneath the eyepiece hood". The problem with the tape is that the viewfinder does not turn on when you put the camera to your eye.

There is an easy solution to that too. Go to Menu 2, page 7 and select "Custom Key Setting. Select the Key you want to use for "Finder/Monitor selection" and then assign "Finder/Monitor selection" to that key. You can now toogle LCD/Viewfinder.

Hi, guys. thank you for your responses!

I am aiming at A7II..As for the button it doesn't matter to

me which one as long I as don't have to go to the menu.

I tried to find that option in the camera at a local store

but failed.

Failing at that was not your fault. You can't find

what is not there :-(

The toggle you want is available on the a7R-II,

but NOT on the basic a7-II.

Please note the recommended tape is TRANSLUCENT.

It really does work as claimed. If your EVF is refusing to

turn on, then your tape is either opaque, or just too dark.

Use the right tape and you'll be pleased with the result.

nder what brand name or for what purpose is this TRANSLUCENT made? I would like to try some but have drawn a blank in shops here

Yep. Those are the ones. The eye detect to turn on the EVF puts out an infared signal and is looking for the signal to be bounced back. The Light Dims will cause the sensor to be less sensitive so it won't switch over to the EVF unless you are much closer to the eye piece.

I use one of the small pieces and cover up the lower half of the sensor in the eye piece. Works wonders.
