Hello,

I just recently went on a trip to Thailand, and took a small PC for making backup of the cards,

and new memory sticks.

The problem is that my first card (which I did have formatted because I had 3 backups) is corrupted,

the size of the files were the same as of the card, but now they seem corrupted and the computer

recognize the ARW files, they will show as blank.

Is there a way to fix the ARW files or extract the embedded JPGs?

I searched many forums and tried different programs, but none that does what I am looking for.

any help or recommendation will be truly appreciated.

Giancarlo Bianchi.

Does the replay function show the raw or the embedded jpg?

It did, the thing is. That I felt safe having 3 backups, and now it seems that the files are corrupted.

The size of the files is there, but somehow my Mac wont detect it like image files.

I have tried to rescue the information from the original card, but it was written over.

What I would like to know, is if there is a program that could checksum the files I have and "reencode" for proper reading.

I know I am asking for a miracle, but I cant think of any other option.

I'll give another vote for Data Rescue.

It's the only Mac software I know of that can rescue (most) of the files from a formatted disk (depending upon how much has been written to it since formatted).

Thanks, will try with that one.

Like I wrote earlier, I felt safe because I had 3 backups, so I used again the card.

Have tried with 4 programs with no luck, they just show the latest card. Hope to have better luck with data rescue.

It's a long shot, but if you're comfortable with the command line you might try dcraw (it is available for every major operating system):

DCRaw

If you're on a Mac (and possibly even on Linux) try something along these lines, running the following command in the same folder where the pictures are (maybe copy them first on an hard drive). This will take quite a bit of time, dcraw is not exactly a speed demon.

for filename in *.ARW ; do dcraw -H 0 -w -o 4 -q 3 -6 -T "$filename" ; done

Good luck!

You have files on a SD Card? You can copy them to you Mac? But they are not processed by any software, probably because they are corrupt.

I suggest you copy one of these files to Dropbox or similar and perhaps someone here will take a look and see if they contain any useful data.

Hello Tim,

That is a nice idea, here is a link to a random corrupted file, please tell me it can be recovered!!

The file is all 1's, so no useful data to be recovered.

It could be possible that the file system is corrupt, pointing to un-used space on the card, and that the photos are still on the card ... and repairing the file system might make them recoverable. But you need to google a bit to find a tool you are comfortable with.

If you can read it in your camera, plug the card in your camera and use a cable to connect to your PC for the download.

I could also sent through wifi... the problem is that as I did 3 independent backups I formatted and wrote over the card,

just when I got back home, I noticed the data was corrupted, not the same computer I had on my trip, unfortunately,

    • Like Cameratose, I usually go for as much depth of field as I can, but sometimes there is no getting around out of focus areas, such as a closeup of a cactus flower.  I guess, everything else being equal, I might be concerned about a lenses bokeh, but everything else is seldom equal.  At this point in my photography I think I have bigger problems than unattractive bokeh.
    • I elected to upgrade from Sony A1 to the A1 ii and am seeing some significant focusing challenges in the little time I've spent with it so far. Less than 10% of photos appear to be in focus when photographing small birds in subject mode birds with seemingly no improvement when subject mode is changed to birds/animals/people. Scenario: Sony A1 ii, 200-600 G lens @ 600mm, F6.3, shutter speed on male cardinal (in-focus mostly) at 1/250 ISO 125 and female cardinal (nothing in focus) at 1/1600 ISO 100; AF-C set with eye supposedly in focus in both shots. Lens has AF on, OSS on, Mode 1. I've tried switching out lenses using 100-400 with and without 1.4X converter and used handheld and used tripod. Photos are at a distance of 20-25 yards. The photos below are within a couple yards of one another. There is seemingly no improvement in AF performance despite the combinations of lens, tripod and focus zones attempted. Birds are stationary. Many of the photos will have everything in the frame seemingly out of focus and some may have the head in focus and rest of body out of focus and immediate area around bird slightly out of focus at F9-F11. I considered that I was cropping too much and had pixel peeping / expectations problem, but some photos are wildly out of focus when supposedly focusing on eye or body. Neither photo below is cropped. Ideas are welcome!

    • Agreed, but it's ancient thinking. Any modern forum lets you edit whenever. It's simply a setting they could click to turn off. It's one reason I won't post many photos here. After 10 minutes I lose complete control over my own property.
