New Metabones adapter firmware V 0.50 supposed to give us native Sony focus modes for EF lenses

Loaded the update V0.50 (from 0.49) onto my A7ii / Metabones IV no dramas. I briefly tried my Canon 50 STM lens on it this evening, indoors, low light and wasn't all that enamoured, seemed to hunt more than previously. Fortunately, as per Metabones website, you can switch back to the "older" Green mode PDAF with the broader AF area and it seemed to hunt less, still, not my cup of tea. Been spoilt by the simplicity and elegance of MF. I may give the new firmware / algorithms a fairer run another day as I do still have some nice Canon L glass and maybe in better light...?

Threw my contax 50 1.7 back on, and aaah, that's better. No surprises.

Just took this photo after 50 update.

Steve, great pic, but what I'd really like to know, was the newer FW a sep in the right direction, did it change the focus performance in any way over the last FW?

I currently have the non Is version of that lens and an A7RII and performance is acceptable, but not top notch. Considering either the Metabones or the Sigma adapter if it adds a little snappiness to the AF.

What are your thoughts?

cheers

D.

Check out the discussion by folk over at Dpreview under the News article of June 23. Not too many folk are all that thrilled, it sounds like a step in the right direction, but it looks like it's more 2 steps forward, 3 steps back....sure it will lock...eventually....And may work better with some lenses, than others, maybe with another firmware update...however I switched back to the "green" mode, for those rare AF moments.

Before I bought the Sony A7 in May of last year I had a Canon 70 D.  The Canon 70-200 on the Sony camera with a Metabones IV is as fast in auto focus as it was on the Canon 70D.  It may even be faster.  But I don't see improved performance with this FW.  I consider this acceptable performance all considered.

I need to try some of the other focus modes for comparison.  It will be a couple of days before I can tackle that...traveling tomorrow.

Bravo Metabones!

V0.52 released 30 June, only just saw some chatter over at FredMiranda, read the Metabones release notes, where they openly state, "You have spoken and we have listened" and installed the update.  Tried it out in my kitchen using 50 STM and 70-200 f4 L lenses in the now default Green mode and voila, back to snappy, possibly even feels better, given my quick n dirty test was indoors in lowish light.  nice to see a company so responsive.  thank you.  Haven't tried it in the "native/advanced" emulation mode, nor on my other lenses 100L, 200Lii, 24 IS.  May provide an update after the sun comes up...

Oh yeah, this is on my Sony A7ii and Metabones IV.
