Hello! I recently started shooting RAW so this may be a n00b question, but something that I did not notice before. My pictures that I shot appear much brighter in my viewfinder than once I upload onto my computer. The example below was taken off of my phone so not as accurate, but you can see how much lighter his face is.

Any advice would be appreciated, thank you!

In the photo you provided, we are seeing two different

images. One is a processed jpg [camera monitor] and

the other is an unprocessed RAW [PC monitor]. There

is therefor no reason to expect them both to look alike.

Calibrating your monitor will not make this go away but

it can be very helpful when processing files for printing.

The camera does not display RAW images. It always

provides a jpg display image, even if you shoot RAW

without any accompanying jpg files saved to the card.

Notice that if you use the "RAW + JPG" quality setting,

the playback shows only one version of the shot rather

than two versions for the two file types recorded. Yet in

the PC's file browser, you do see two files both having

the same frame number but differing name extensions.

Every Sony in-camera jpg is influenced by whichever

"Creative Style" you are using. You cannot turn these

off. You can only alter them, and choose among them.

However, "Creative Styles" do not influence RAW files.

There's a possibility that you have DRO switched on, which can alter the way a photo looks based on under or overexposure within a frame, but the only way to leverage that technology is to use the Sony IDC. Since you're obviously not using that software for raw conversions, just go into the camera menu settings and change HDR/DRO to off. It should give you an image preview much closer to what you'll see on your computer screen.

What brightness setting did you use on your Mac? It is the (second and) third key from left on the top row of your keyboard.

I set my brightness so that the screen is as close as possible to the output from my printer.

Usually there is no need to calibrate the Mac screen.
