Wireless Intervalometer a7Rii

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know of a quality wireless intervalometer for the a7Rii? I have tried the Vello Shutterboss and it did not work at all. I need more control than the play memories app affords. The GigaPro has a 90 shot max, so that is clearly not enough frames for serious timelapse. I would appreciate any ideas.

I have used the time-lapse app a number of times, and it worked out quite well.

Easily well enough for me to not buy a physical device to do the same job.

In some ways it´s better than the old-fashioned way, I believe. There are settings for how quickly the camera can compensate for changes in changing light/exposure. This makes for a series of images with smooth transitions at sunrise for example.

And if you set it up the shot within the app, you can start capture using an infrared remote.

So what sort of extra control do you need? It can do timelapse, in RAW. :)

However I will admit it takes some practice to use. I mean why do I need to set my exposure settings and image quality again, within the app? Whereas the limits for auto-ISO can only be set prior to starting the app? etc. They have come so far, only to have these lilttle annoyances...

So weird that this is so hard to find.

The Sony app that is built in is nice, unless you want to do something longer than a minute or two in output.

In particular, I want a wireless solution because I would also use it with the RX100 III which allows one to power the camera via USB while shooting.... which is essential for those overnight time lapses.

I realize that you unsuccessfully tried the standard wireless Shutterboss, but I just ordered this one from B&H.  It's a bluetooth version programmed from an IOS phone or tablet and appears to offer a great deal of control. I plan to use it for time lapse on an A7R2 & A7S2.  Actually, I've had a great deal of success with the Play Memories app and will continue to use it most of the time and always use it in custom mode. I've been wanting something like this with a good timer function for doing Milky Way sequences which won't begin until 2:00am or so. I hate getting out of a warm sleeping bag to turn a camera on.

    • I'd use Focus Area: (Expand) Flexible Spot: S instead of Center. Smaller focus area and more control over where to focus. https://helpguide.sony.net/ilc/1710/v1/en/contents/TP0001653124.html
    • New Sony user here, trying to get my head around all of the differences from Fuji 😬  I’ve figured out most of the settings, but can’t find any answers on how to do a custom white balance for studio flash. The custom setting option only seems to be based on measuring ambient light. The only workaround I can think of is to set an approximate kelvin value and then shoot a grey card and fix it in post, but I’d much prefer to get it right in camera.    camera is an A7CR TIA Vinnie
    • I am not sure what effect you are trying to achieve regarding the bluish cast of the water.  Do you want to neutralize it or enhance it?  It would be best if you Google polarizer filter for camera and look at the images and videos and see if you can find the desired effect that seem to mirror your situation.  If you can't find the effect you are looking for, it may not be possible to do so with the Polarizer.  I use the polarizer to minimize the shimmering reflections in the water that would look distracting in the image. Neutral density filters are used to reduce the amount of light coming into the camera.  If you want to shoot a small waterfall and you want to create an angel veil effect by reducing the shutter speed to seconds but the light conditions won't allow you to do so, you can use neutral density filters to shoot at very slow shutter speeds. Neutral density and polarizing filters can get very expensive.  If your lenses share a common filter size, that would be great.  If not, get the filters for the largest filter diameter lens and get a set of stepping rings to use with your smaller filter diameter lenses.
