Metabones IV Focus Area?

Hi,

 

Instead of waiting for the Sony g master versions I decided to get the Metabones IV adapter to use with my EF 70-200 IS f4 and EF 24-70 f2.8 II.   I have upgraded my A7II to have the latest 3.10 firmware and I upgraded the firmware on the metabones as well.

 

Autofocus is quick and responsive.    However it seems I can only select focus points in the middle of the frame.  Is this what I should be expecting?  Or is there some settings in the camera that I need to change to get a wider area of focus points.

I am interested as well how this lens performed on A7 II and A7 R II,

I plan to move on A7R II very soon and to get the Metabones Smart T adapter.

The outermost points are not the same type as the inner AF points.

 

One set is phase focusing and the other is contrast focusing altho

I'm not sure which is which, cuz I don't have much use for AF. The

MetaBones does not engage both sets. I think it uses only contrast

focus, which is why it is sometimes accused of being slow at AF, so

it seems to me that the outermost AF points are prolly phase focus

and the inner would be contrast focusing. Phase focus is faster but

contrast focus is often more accurate. IIRC, should you attach any

native FE lens, you would gain access to all the AF points without

needing to change your current menu settings.

the article suggeststhat the central 30% is PDAF. 117 points, that feels about right from what I see in my viewfinder. I have no problems with AF accuracy with these PDAF points on my Canon L lenses.

As an aside, my previous body, the Canon 6D, wasn't much different in terms of area covered by AF points. And I couldn't do MF very well on that, hence my switch to the Sony...with PDAF we now have both, OK, AF is somewhat limited, but it ain't bad...

 

Aside from the sheer pleasure of manual focus, this limitation Is also why it's nice to have both AF and MF lenses. If and when you need or want to, you can use the full frame for focussing using focus magnify when shooting with MF lenses.

Thanks for the responses.   I'm mainly using my canon glass for portraiture work so I'm cool with the middle focus points.   I didn't know if it was a metabones limitation or a settings issue.    After upgrading the firmware in my A7II and the firmware in the metabones IV all I can say is wow for the autofocus with the 70-200 f/4 and 24-70 2.8.

 

At least for now I can save some money on new g master glass.

Ahh after looking at the Brian Smith post http://briansmith.com/sony-a7ii-firmware-update-adds-af-system-selection/ it now makes sense why I can only choose focus points centered in the middle.   The A7II has a lot few PDAF points than the A7Rii
