Dear Forum,

 

Today we have just launched the latest edition of Capture One!  Capture One Pro 9 and Capture One Express 9 (for Sony)

- New Processing Engine

- New Color Editor Interface with the ability to create masks from Color selections

On a personal note I will say that I didn’t look much into the new behaviour of the Contrast and Brightness sliders in the new processing engine at first.  But I really must say it makes this rather rudimentary tool something special.  Adding contrast to an image can often be a tough task, especially if you want to retain colors and saturation and not block up the blacks and ruin the highlights.  The new processing engine does a great job of adding contrast in a subtle way.  If you want even more control, then you have the Luma curve and the saturation slider at your disposal.

 

No doubt there will be some responses of “what about xyz tool??”.  Remember, 9.0 is just the start and there is always more to come.  Don’t forget throughout the life of Capture One 8 we added new features and tools, for example the Color Balance tool.

I raised my one major concern on the C1 forums, and didn't really get a reply. I hope you don't mind me plonking it in here.

Is what I describe something that works differently in v9 or something that could be sorted?

Hi,

After moving from Lightroom to C1 I thought now might be a good time to have a look through my old images and sort them.

After spending a while applying all my ratings and the like I have come to a fairly large problem. I can only seem to sort by the direct folder the images are in OR every single photo in the whole collection.

In the image above I have sorted all my A100 folder and would like to apply a filter looking for 4 stars or more in the whole folder tree. Is there any way to do this without sorting by all images?

I just bought C1 Pro on 10/27/15 from B&H.  Now the new release.

 

What is the policy for people buying previous version just before new release?

 

Are you expecting us to shell out another $99 to update after a month of activation and just learning the software?

I think Phase One is just trying to get more money since that Pro 8 (Sony Deal) is not been around long with all the issues and updates and now they want us to pay $99? 

 

I think a small say $20 upgrade from Pro 8 to Pro 9 is fair but I won't pay $99.

New Pro is 279 €

 

Upgrade Sony Express 8 to Pro 9 Sony is 50 €

I guess the problem is confusion rather than fairness. I figure you are up for around 40 what-evers to go from Sony Pro to Sony Pro    :)   Me too, seems OK, will get to it in a moment, need an expresso first.

 

Perhaps, having an overview page/table, with prices and links would be helpful?

It looks like not every one is getting the right product. I upgraded from C1Pro 8.3.4 (sony) to C1Pro 9.0.0 (sony):

Well at least I tried to... It's 10€ difference, nothing I have to worry about. But as I "check(ed) updates" inside of C1 and gave my e-Mail Adress as verification for the download (who is the same adress, where my C1 pro account is registered), it should give me the right solution.

 

It looks like I bought a new sony-c1pro-licence instead of an upgrade...

Puzzled for a while too..  Ended up downloading the trial, installing it and it picked up my existing 8.3.4 install. Gave me a link for upgrade for 40 euro.

 

It's a shame Phase One don't have the info on the store pages though.

Really cool additions!

At least a useable keyword tool. And saving color selection as a mask looks great too.

 

So, if I worked with LR and imported these to C1. Should I re-import it now, because the import engine is better now?

 

No need to end up reimporting!  Just open your existing catalog into Capture One Pro 9

As I said, 10€ are not enough for me to get angry.

But I verified me two times with my mail adress (that is related to an C1Pro licence). The 1st time, as I checked for updates inside my C1Pro8.3.4 to get the download link. The 2nd time was just before I came to the site you have linked. So I was logged in on phaseone. Don't you think, that I can expect, the relevant tab to be seen first?

anyway, on the layout of this site, the tab function isn't obvious, on the first look.

Most software vendors have a "grace period" policy in place. Meaning that if an upgrade comes out within ~3 months of a purchase, that purchaser gets the upgrade for free. Does PhaseOne have such a policy? If yes, what are the details?

Methinks that Phase One may have shot themselves in the foot with so short a grace period.

 

Not much has changed, so no real need to upgrade. I find version 8 is performing better, to be honest, and version 9 is _even_ slower than 8 (which was already bad enough on a recent iMac 5k). I'm going to wait for 9.1, or whatever, since I personally don't see the value here right now.

 

Anyway, upgrade is $40, not much more than the cost of processing 4 rolls of film ...

Cost is not the point.  Its the general principal of how they treat customers who just bought the superseded version, unknowingly.

 

Also the full pro version cost is $99 for those of us that have more than just Sony....

The Best way to do sorting is in Collections. Leave the photos in whatever Folder they are in.  Then make collections that make sense to you.....Projects and Albums and Folders.  Then use the Filters to select what every Photos you want.  You can make up your own filter rules also
