I have been using Play Memories Mobile app since I bought my A7. Recently switched to Android 6.0 on my phone and alas, it doesn't work anymore!! Tried NFC, direct connect and it just got stuck at "Connecting" on both the camera and the app.

Even Sony issues an incompatibility news in their app, but I found a work around.

  1. NFC to get the camera to register itself with the phone, the PMM app will fail at this point, stuck in "connecting"
  2. Quit the app and go to the WIFI settings, manually connect to the camera WIFI Direct connection, wait for it to show "Connected, no internet connection"
  3. Wait for a little while longer till a dialog shows up asking "This connection has no internet, stay connected?". At this point DO NOT CHECK THE BOX THAT SAYS "don't ask me next time", just click ok and let it stay connected.
  4. Start PMM app and tap the camera connection, the transfer should start soon.

The issue is that the Marshmallow is very anal about whether a connection is internet-enabled or not. Letting it stay connected everytime will let you transfer via PMM.app.

I got a news message weeks before Android 6 was rolled out (directly within the App) which clearly said that the PlayMemories Mobile App is NOT WORKING with Android 6.

I nevertheless updated my 2 Nexus devices (Nexus 5 and Nexus 9) as the Sony App is not that important for me.

My Nexus 5 is currently not able to connect to my Sony cameras (same issue as you described)

My Nexus 9 works without any problems (even with Android 6)
