Mirrorless

E-Mount native but with supplied non-obstrusive adapter for A-Mount lenses that will provide screw driven lenses with full AF capabilities without having to resort to AF sensors in the camera or adapter ( sort of LA-EA3 and a half with screw-drive AF but no mirror since the on sensor PDAF will act as the sensors )

Improved PDAF support

Since it will use the original Alpha battery (NP-FM500H), battery consumption will be less of an issue

Would also be nice to get a similar camera with 24MPx at a more reasonable price !

  • Mirrorless

Mirrorless is possible, as new sensor AF's really well native a-mount lenses - I tested, shot like 3000 photos

E-mount native -- I don't believe so. Mirrorless construction makes it possible indeed

support 24 MP sensor idea as fast and more responsive camera with even better low light capabilities. But there is no new BSI 24 MP sensor yet...

Specs:

Something from the A7MII series with a very

cool beautifully integrated A-mount adapter.

The battery question looms large. Maybe keep

with the A99 battery as courtesy to A-mount

legacy .... or the bottom of the camera made

a bit bigger for a pair of E-mount batteries.

Seems to me there could be perhaps two levels

of features, maybe an A99II and an A89II, but

would the A89 really NEED a "II" on its name ?

The specs of the A99 mk2 will depend on where Sony seeks to position this new camera.

IF they are seeking to position it against the Nikon 810 or Canon EOS 5DS ® then they will have to come up with something special to be the real "King of the hill".

I think Sony had their nose put out when some of the feedback on the A77 mk2 was not as positive as they expected and I hope they will not make only cosmetic changes to the A99 to arrive at the A99 mk2.

By doing away with the Semi Translucent mirror one can gain enough space to incorporate Sony & 3rd party lens adaptors.

I like the idea of E-Mount native but with supplied fully integrated A-mount adapter. This would open up the using of new FE Sony and Zeiss lenses.

Via a 3rd party adaptor other manufacturer lenses can be used. This would tempt many “other system” photographers switching to Sony and keeping the full DSLR size/flexibility whilst not losing their investment in their existing lenses.

Much more RAM to cope with uncompressed raw images in burst mode.

Able to capture 100 raw uncompressed 42 MP images at 10 frames per second.

Battery capacity is a problem and will be exacerbated when 4K video is captured for extended periods.

I am not sure how they overcome this. A bigger battery is a possibility. An integrated vertical grip incorporating 2 or even 3 batteries is possible but the overall size will be a real hand full and very heavy over an extended shoot.

Pixel shift for ultra-high resolution still images is on my "wish list".

Full remote control via WiFi is a must.

Extended ISO range would be good

4k120p I find VERY unlikely even for 2017 models. The best we can hope for is 4k60p at 200mbps HEVC with 10bit/4:4:4 hdmi 2.0 raw output AND decent quality binning for FF-4k

(not like in the A7rII).

Hi Tamas970.

I think you are right. My original figure of 120 fps @ 4K is a bit too much to expect so soon.

I really think Sony needs to lift its CPU speed/capacity to bring itself "back into the Ball Park" with both Nikon and Canon when processing RAW files.

I think the A99 mk2 may very well be postponed to address this very issue. I believe Sony wants to be number one in the world of photography and has a long term plan on how to achieve that. Their growth in the world sensor market is just one example.

I believe the A99 mk2 will be the significantly different from the A7 mk2 because:

1. I think Sony wants to position the A99 mk2 as a Professional User's camera.

2. The A7 mk2 is positioned as an advanced Enthusiast's camera.

3. It will not just be a A7 mk2 in a bigger body. (If it is, then Sony is missing an opportunity.)

My 5 cents. :)

CPU/board boost is a must, both in terms of absolute performance and power consumption - seeing the overheating reports on the A7rII. I am seriously interested in video, I don't know what to expect in this department. Sure, pro's rarely use DSLR-s for video, pro camcorders are much better for that and they might want to protect that segment just as canon does. However for the same reason, superior 4k video would be a definitive selling point to me over feature sparing canon bodies.

I would really like to see the new version of the A99 mark2 as the first "full DSLR" size mirrorless camera.

It would have all the features of the A7R mk2 with at least the following additional benefits:

  1. FE mount on body.
  2. A fully integrated A mount adaptor allowing both electronic and screw focus A mount lens to be attached.
  3. The A99 body will have space for seriously upgraded CPU and on-board ram.
  4. Touch rear screen.
  5. Fully articulated rear screen like the current A99 or A77.
  6. Full remote control over all electronically changeable settings via wifi app on android, iphone.
  7. Streaming of 4K video out via suitable cable or wifi.
  8. Continuous power supply via micro USB (2 or 3)
  9. 2 memory card slots.(each with 128Gb & UHS-II 280 Mbytes/sec transfer speed capacity)
  10. 4K video to the capacity of the card(s) and not 29 minute limit.
  11. Full weather sealing.
  12. Improved sensor cleaning system.
  13. Improved auto-focus speed
  14. Silent electronic on-sensor global shutter
  15. Extended real world usable ISO maybe even going down to “ISO 5”. This would offset the need for ND filters in very bright conditions.

Hi Jackdevant.

It is my "Wish" list.

I do not expect all of these to be satisfied all at once, but I live in hope.  :)

But seriously, what I have read regarding the feedback about the way Sony wastes space with their new uncompressed RAW format.

Others have said that Sony needs to do one or all of the following:

1. Change from totally uncompressed RAW to Lossless compressed RAW.

2. Dramatically increase the size of "on-board" ram.

3. Dramatically upgrade the processing power of the on-board CPU.

4. By seriously upgrading the SD card slot transfer speed, it recognises the really large file size overhead of taking best quality 4K video for extended periods.

5. Having the ability to "mirror" / "live" back up using 2 card slots would be a "nice to have".

Also simply adding a touch screen will make the camera so much easier to use especially when one wants to quickly change the spot focus point.

Full remote control via WiFi is my personal wish as I need to be able to control the camera whilst it is supported on a boom or other rig.

Only time will tell how accurate all of our guesses will be.  :)

Regards,

David
