MartLaw68
Hello, hope all is well? I bought a New A7 IV with a 24-105 lens only 8 weeks ago. I am very to new to photography and have lots to learn but today my worse nightmare happened... I had what I first thought was shutter failure, the shutter speed was missing from the display and then the camera froze, wouldn't allow a reset. So I did the taking out of the batteries and the memory cards and let it power down and rest for about an hour. lens was detached during this process. Put the cards back in, batteries back in, switched on the camera and hey presto, all seemed well.........until I attached the lens and noticed the F number was blank and unable to take a photo. took the lens off, took a photo, shutter working fine. Cleaned both lens and camera connections, reattached and f number missing, view is really dark and the camera froze. So in my beginners mind, is the lens or is it? can anyone advise? only lens I have and was looking to a good weekend of using it in this sunny weather! apologies if not using the right terminology Thanks Martyn

Cameratose
While it certainly sounds like the lens, it really could be anything that causes the camera to freeze once the lens is attached. Do you have access to another lens to try it out? A local store, a friend, etc.? These kinds of problems are best approached by process of elimination. You could put that lens on another camera and see if the same thing happens, or, you could put another lens on your camera. Either way should give you your answer. Did you ever try a reset before putting the lens back on? What firmware version is it using? Are you attaching and detaching the lens when the camera is turned on? While there's been debate on whether that's ok (many of us do either by normal practice or occasionally by accident) Sony recommends turning the camera off. When you say 'new', do you mean brand new, or new to you?
MartLaw68
Hi thanks for the reply. I Wii try taking it to a local lens shop and try the elimination process. I have done a reset and the firmware is up to date. the camera and lens were purchased brand new 8 weeks ago, this is the first issue I have had. when I switch it on now the shutter speed is missing, F stop number is missing but I can change the iso and manually focus the lens but then the camera will not take a photo or turn off. very frustrating
