I don't have direct experience with the TC's, but I've heard that both the 1.4 and 2X TCs play well with the 2.8 GM II.

As for a second lens, you'd want something wide, so one of the 24-70/28-75 2.8s would be a natural. However, I recommend a fast wide-ish prime as well, like a 35/1.8 as well for indoor darker shots.

Another option would be the new 28-70/2 which would take the place of both lenses, but it's expensive!

You might also want to consider a ALL-IN-ONE lens -- only because the 70-200mm is not a lightweight.

That could be a 28-85/90mm, for example (lots to choose from), or a 24-105/135mm (not as many in this category).

Pay attention to the max f-stop of whatever you buy so it will be compatible with your converter (if you get one).  You can use any converter with any lens, but depending on the aperture of the lens, you might be restricted to manual focusing.

What converter are you talking about? The number of lenses compatible with E-mount teleconverters is actually pretty limited because lenses not designed for use with a TC will just not physically fit: the front elements of the TC protrude beyond the lens bayonet, colliding with the rear lens element.

You're right, of course.  One more caveat to add to the list of TC issues.

The ones I have will work with any lens, but if the lens isn't fast enough, AF won't work.

The 70-200 f/2.8 GM II, which is referenced in the OP, is not only compatible with Sony's E-mount TC's, but it is extraordinarily lightweight for a lens that size. First time I picked one up I couldn't believe it.

The A-Mount system had many generic TCs, some were decent, some total drek.
