Banding from led lighting

Recommended Posts

I have a Sony A7Rii, with 25mm Zeiss Batis lens.

I had to photograph a funeral service, and to my horror many of the indoor shots were completely unusable on account of hideous horizontal banding comin from the chandeliers, which I assume were leds.

The only way I could resolve this was by lowering the shutter speed right down to 30, which then made many shots blurry.

I tried changing the light-source settings and the colour temperature, but the shutter speed seemed to be the only thing that worked. I've experienced this before with shooting video, and there are plug-ins that can tame the flicker, but there seems to be nothing I can do with the stills.

People using other cameras and smart phones didn't seem to have this problem of banding.

What could I have done to avoid this? In retrospect I should have brought my little hot-shoe light, but felt this would be intrusive.

All suggestions welcome!

Banding due to artificial light sources while using electronic shutter is a well known and documented issue. Google 'electronic shutter banding' for lots of info.

Electronic shutter doesn't work with a flash gun by the way, but I presume you mean a hotshoe mounted 'continuous' light? Either would be very obtrusive in a funeral service anyhow. Better crank up the ISO and use a wide aperture lens than to be in any way disturbing the service. Oh and turn off that focus acquisition light / beep!
