Sony Electronics Announces Development of New 300mm F2.8 G Master OSS Telephoto Full-Frame E-mount Lens, Targeting to Launch in Early 2024

SAN DIEGO, Jan. 17, 2023 -- Today, Sony Electronics announced the development of the long-awaited full-frame E-mount 300mm F2.8 G Master OSS Telephoto Lens, with a target launch date in early 2024.

Large-aperture super-telephoto lenses such as the FE 400mm F2.8 G Master™ OSS and FE 600mm F4 G Master™ OSS are highly acclaimed by sports and wildlife photographers around the world for their outstanding resolution and autofocus (AF) performance, as well as being remarkably lightweight. The new lens will feature the incredible high-resolution and spectacularly beautiful bokeh true to Sony's acclaimed line of flagship G Master™ series lenses, while also offering a far-reaching 300mm focal length and F2.8 large aperture. Sounds ideal- but I'll stick with my 400mm f2.8

I'll be interested to see the weight of the 300mm f/2.8 GM - it's going to be somewhat lighter than the 400mm (although the Sony 400 GM is one of the lightest around!), and probably a rather smaller lens. Judging by the pricing of 300/2.8 vs 400/2.8 from other manufacturers, it's likely to be about half the price, too.

If you already have a 400 GM, I can understand a lack of interest 🙂 

I have stared longingly at the 400 GM and 600 GM, but my wallet keeps reminding me that I can't really afford them   

I might manage to silence my wallet long enough to buy a 300mm f/2.8 GM. I already own both TCs, so I'd be able to use 420/4 and 600/5.6 with this lens.

I'll also be looking for announcement of a 200mm f/2 lens (or f/1.8...) - I have owned the Canon EF version, and it can be useful, too. I'd like to try one for photographing bats at dusk, for example. Typically a 200/2 weighs about the same as a 300/2.8, though - not a lightweight lens.

I have the 400mm GM and use it quite a lot for Wildlife and sports, a 300mm f2.8 would be quite a useful lens, of this I have no doubt - just not for me and I have all applications covered with the lenses I already own
