Sony Upgrade Options

Recommended Posts

I'm looking to upgrade my Canon DSLR to a FF Sony. I don't have a huge budget, maybe $1000 or a little more. I already have a Sony A9ii and I want compatibility for the future. I'm in my first year of sports photography and will primarily be shooting sports. Any suggestions for a camera?

I don't know about pricing, but you'll want a full-frame, e-mount camera with fast focusing for sports.  Reviews will tell you about this.  I suspect that the ones best for sports are pretty expensive, but older, slower models are available for much less.

I don't get it. You're looking for a sports camera for $1000 but you already have an A9ii? You're not gonna find a better sports camera than the A9ii and certainly not for $1000.

^ I want a backup body but also to use it as a second shooter. Ex. Using a super telephoto on the A9ii and maybe a 70-200 on the 2nd body

The A9ii is a FF E-mount camera and after the A1 it's the best sports camera available in Sony land at the moment.

For $1000, you might be able to get a second hand A7iii, but your A9ii will be better in every regard. Expect to be disappointed if the A9ii is your reference.

I've been doing more thinking and research. It looks like the Sony A7iii is what I need to shoot for, I have a cousin who has one so I'll test hers out. For more options though, is it even a smart idea to think about a Sony DSLR and buy an Amount->Emount adapter? I'm basically starting over buying lenses (other than a sigma 150-600 w/ mc-11) so would that scenario even be something to look into?

A lot depends on if you want to stick with the a-mount or e-mount.

There are a ton of a-mount lenses out there -- new and old, but Sony is leaving the a-mount to history.  There will not be many (any?) a-mount camera in the future.  The same is true for lenses.

Me? I'm sticking/stuck with a-mount and not complaining.

I don't know the details, but there are a-mount to e-mount adapters, but they all have certain limitations, such as focusing speed, and ability to work with certain lenses having certain features.

I think investing in A-mount gear is never wise if you're planning to go full E-mount in the long run. The A99ii is a pretty capable sports camera but it'll set you back well more than $1000 2nd hand. And then you need lenses, which will always show some reduction in AF capabilities when adapted to E-mount. If you invest in A-mount now, it's either because you already have an A-mount camera/lenses or because you can get some cheap vintage gear and are fine with the limitations that go with it, like @XKAES does.
