Need a simple way to display viewfinder on computer monitor

Camera : Sony a7II

Computer : Laptop with Windows 10

Scenario : A group of senior folks trying to learn bokeh photography on a natual scene

Need:

How to SIMPLY hook up the camera to a laptop so that the laptop monitor displays whatever the camera's viewfinder sees.  Just the display, do not need sophisticated tethering and editing.

Thanks.

You could just plug a HDMI cable from the a7ii into the monitor's HDMI port, it wont work if you only have a laptop with hdmi out though

Dslrdashboard works with sony cameras via wifi apparently:

You could also tether with Capture One:

You could also buy a capture card like the ones from Elgato.

Thank you.

Got a7II hooked to my laptop by a HDMI cable and found it not working.

My laptop is originally a Windows 7 upgraded to Windows 10. It could very well be that its HDMI port is only "OUT" since it was produced before the era of a7II.

There are both USB 2.0 & 3.0 ports on my laptop.  Can USB cable provide the same service?

Thanks.

I did not know DSLRDashboard works over WiFi.  I tried it out.  Pretty fast tethering. I didnt see any lag in live view.  But you can't change aperture, ISO, or shutter speed from the software.

Thank you.

No.  That will not work.

You will either have to connect the HDMI to a LCD screen directly or get an external HDMI to USB live view adapter like this http://www.amazon.com/Elgato-Capture-PlayStation-gameplay-1080p/dp/B00840353W/ (as mentioned above)

It is still exceptionally rare to have anything other than HDMI out on computer systems. The opposite is true of displays, such as televisions and LCD monitors.

You can:

1. Plug the camera to your laptop via USB, and use software like capture one or Sony remote control. Then you hook your laptop by HDMI to a TV or external monitor. Everyone will see your laptop monitor.

2. Plug the camera to a TV or LCD monitor by HDMI. Everyone will see your camera screen directly.

Seems #2 is easiest and probably what you're after.

Good luck =)

  • 2 years later...

This thread is pretty old but just in case someone finds it as I did, the new PC aplications from Sony, Remote, Viewer and Edit that are free, allows tethering without fuss. You just need to use Remote.

Later on you can transfer if needed the pics from one application to another

Thanks
