Original A7R - Help With Play Memories Mobile Please

My Sony A7R will only intermittently connect to my i-Pad's Imaging Edge app. When it does work correctly, it will immediately go to the camera's QR code and I then can connect that way. However, most of the time, the little icon just spins and the camera is searching and shows "wi-fi standby." It doesn't matter where I am when this occurs, so it doesn't seem to be an issue of interference. I've been in touch with Sony a number of times and we have tried most everything, including a camera reboot, to no avail. (I do have the latest firmware). I only use this feature for Smart Remote Control for light painting and related work.

It was  last suggested that I send the camera in for repair. The last unrelated repair, a few years ago, was with Precision out of NJ. It was a horrible experience. So, any suggestions re how to get the camera's wireless back on track? Also, if repairs are needed, are there any alternatives to Precision?

I have a similar problem with my A7Rii. I have resigned myself to enjoying the camera as a camera without the additions of fancy software and connectivity.

According to Imaging Edge website, Wi-Fi Connection for remote shooting is unsupported except for the more recent generations of the Alpha e-mount cameras.
