Sony a5100 transfer files to MacBook

Hi everyone, I'm a new user to the Sony a series cameras, having just bought a used 5100. 

I have just tried to transfer some photos across to my MacBook, and nothing seems to work. As recommended, I downloaded the Playmemories software to try to do this wirelessly, but the software won't open- it says it needs to be updated in order to work with the latest MacOS.

I have also tried to connect the camera via usb, and have tried putting it into USB mass storage mode, to just see the camera as a drive, but the MacBook doesn't recognise it at all.

Has anyone else come across this problem, and found a solution?
