Self take advice required

Hi guys,

New time the forum and have recently purchased an a7ii and 55mm f1.8 prime for my self take photography for fishing.

The issues I'm having is I am using the camera on a tripod with an intervelometer for my capture pictures but finding the camera is insistent on focusing on my face whilst leaving the fish out of focus more times ot not on pictures whilst I am holding the fish.

 

Can anyone point me in the right direction for settings or anything I am currently doing wrong ? 

The camera is set to appature priority so I get a nice blurred background but not getting the fish in focus is killing me

But seriously... this sounds like a job for manual focus and an aperture that gives sufficient depth of field. Maybe first, make sure that face detect is turned off.

Register fish shape/face as recognition shape priority? Or small aperture / slow shutter speed / manual focus and hold fish in same plane as your face.
