  1. Hi all, I've been doing some tests with my A7rii, trying to get a cinematic look (of course), filming in Slog2 (pp7), and also trying some shots with Cine gamma rather than Slog. I seem to be having an issue, which is basically getting constant noise in any dark areas. I'm following all of the 'correct' procedures, overexposing by 1 or 2 stops etc, but can't seem to get rid of the noise. It's really nasty, blocky digital noise too. The problem is exponentially worse in low-light, but I get it in bright sunlight as well. Any ideas? I'm wondering about trading my a7rii for an a7sii so at least low light won't be as much of an issue. I've attached some screenshots at 100% (these have a LUT on, but noise is still present in untreated footage, worse if anything). Here is a rough idea of my set up: S35 variable ND filter to keep 1/50 shutter aperture between 3.5-5 for these shots Sony FE 24–240mm lens ISO lowest 800 – highest 6400 (doesn't make a difference to noise at all) PP7 mainly XACV S at 4K and HD, 100mbs and 50mbs, doesn't make a difference to noise Cine gamma seems to produce slightly less noise...but not much Thanks!
  2. Sony "smart remote control" could be a tool for anyone who wants a "fast" field monitor, BUT this application IS NOT WORKING with profiles like Slog2/3. Thus this application become completely useless for any professional or enthusiasist or even an amauter videographer. SONY has to improve this application. We have paid thousands dollars/euros to buy these cameras and you give us a completely useless application. Please update "smart remote control"
  3. I'm using Sony A6300(latest firmware) for video (mostly) and using my Android phone and the latest Smart Remote Control for visual feedback. Before I'm connecting the phone with the camera I set up everything including picture profile like s-log2/3. But as soon as I'm connecting the phone and the camera the picture profile change to default. Is anybody know why is this happening and/or how to prevent it? Thanks, dns
  4. Is there a way to change picture profile to slog aka PP7 in the A7r / ILCE-7r ?
  5. For me and my Sony A7S (mk1), I concluded that S-log was not useful for my purposes in most circumstances. I do mainly wildlife and nature stuff, so while I do a bit of color correction, I rarely give my footage a color grade as I usually need all the colors to look as "realistic" as possible. The main problem I had with S-log on the A7S was that while it did offer extended dynamic range, I was struggling to get the contrast and saturation back in the mid tones of the image during post, with or without various LUTs applied. I was actually struggling to get the mid tones to look anything like they do straight out of the camera with PP2 or any rec709 PP applied, which has good contrast and saturation in the mid tones, but lower DR. The main reason that I put this down to, was that while s-log is great for those of us wanting to apply creative color grades, and especially for people who want a lower contrast image, s-log2 and S-log3 are really meant for 10bit video files. As great as the Sony A7S is, it still outputs an 8bit signal, which means that some compromises need to be made in order to capture that extra detail in the shadows and highlights. I feel that compromise becomes apparent when you then try to put contrast back into the mid- tones and get them to look how they would if you had recorded in a rec709 profile. The 8bit image just doesn't stand up to the pushing and pulling required to get that contrast back like a 10bit or raw image would. Therefore, I concluded that the S-log profiles on the A7S would only be useful for me when I have no other choice but to shoot in super high contrast situations, and I absolutely need detail in both highlights and shadows. The rest of the time, I'm going to be exposing my rec709 image carefully, and getting my highlights under control before I start shooting. The reason why I chose to post this here is that I see very little conversation about this problem. Most posts about s-log are from the viewpoint of people applying creative grades which, like I say, is totally valid. But, there is very little conversation about how S-log on the A7S is less useful for those of us needing to capture rich mid tones and maintain a greater accuracy in our images, and if there is any conversation about it at all, then it's being drowned out by people raving about S-log as a feature. Don't get me wrong, I love that Sony is pushing the boat out and cramming in so much to these tiny cameras for such a great price! In some ways it's a shame, because I often find myself at the mercy of the weather and other conditions, and a true high dynamic range profile would be really useful, but then again, I also understand that this is what you pay all the extra money for, when you buy a camera that can shoot 10bit, or raw video. Anyway, I would love to hear from others in a similar situation if you have any thoughts on this. Do you shoot docs (and I don't mean those low contrast, color graded hipster docs), and have found a practical use for S-log on an 8bit video image that looks good? I would love to be proved wrong and learn how to get the best out of it. I've just purchased the A7Sii so I'll definitely keep experimenting, but I wont be using S-log2/3 for any wildlife video soon. Like I say, I'm not really interested in being told how great s-log is from people shooting fiction, advertising, art films etc, unless you can demonstrate that contrast and color in the midtones can be brought back to the same quality as the mid tones in a rec709 image in a side-by-side comparison. I'm looking for a sensible, open discussion, not a shouting match between fanboys/girls. Thanks,
  6. Hello everyone! First post here! I have been shooting on the a7s for quite a while and love it! I do regular RAW edit videos on my YouTube channel and here is my latest video out and about! Would love some feedback! Cheers! More of my work on YouTube! - http://www.youtube.com/davidpiersonfilms
  7. I've recently embarked on a several month long trip with plans to make movie that I've been thinking about for quite some time. I bought the A7SII a couple weeks after it was release, spent another week or so testing with it, packed up and left. This was my first mirrorless camera and my first Sony, coming from Canon's DSLR's there has been a bit of a learning curve. At this point I've memorized just about all the menu's, got the custom buttons all set and am beginning to feel quite comfortable shooting with the camera. In my research I'd decided on a Picture Profile and settings to get the best image out of the camera. The purpose of this post is to get your opinion, and some feedback on my choice of settings. Which are as follows: Picture Profile Settings Black Level: 0 Gamma: S-Log3 Black Gamma > Range: Middle , Level: 0 Knee: > Mode: Auto , Auto Set > Max Point: 100, Sensitivity: Mid Color Mode: S-Gamut3 Saturation: 0 Color Phase: 0 Color Depth: 0 Detail: -7 > Mode; Auto, V/H Balance: 0, B/W Balance Type3, Limit: 7, Crispening:0, hi_light Detail: 0 Record Settings XAVC S 4k: 30p 100M XAVC S HD 1080: 120p 100M (for slow motion) Exposure I always try to over expose by 1.5 to 2 stops. I'd planned on using zebra's at +100 to keep my over exposure in check, but in my Picture Profile, I wouldn't see them even in the brightest conditions. White Balances Avoiding Auto white balance anytime I can. Shutter Speed I find myself shooting at 1/50th of a second pretty much all the time. I was shooting 1/60th at home, but in Asia that cause flicking with some light sources. I've also gotten strobing while shooting slow motion 120fps, and a the minimum shutter speed of 1/125th. The only solution I could find for this was to shoot 60p instead of 120p, which did not seem like a great solution. ISO Is almost always locked at 1600. I have prime lenses that go to f/1.4 so I rarely need to turn it up. When shooting at night, I have a choice of either underexposing my image or turning up my ISO. The higher ISO seem to have a lot of noise in the shadows with the settings I have, so I had chosen to underexpose sometime at night. I'm starting to think that's the wrong decision. I should keep turning the ISO up until my meter tells the image have correct or even slightly over exposure. Straight out of the camera the footage will have some noise, but once corrected back to Rec-709ish the noise should be better acceptable. Does this seem correct? Focus I had focus peaking on at first, but have found it to be not as accurate as I'd like. I've not got Custom Button 1 set to "Focus Magnifier" and I use it often to punch in to ~10x, check focus, back out, then start shooting. Concerns when reviewing the footage are: Noise and sharpness. I've been throwing a LUT on the shots to check my work at night, and even with that there still seems to be more visible noise than I expected. As for sharpness, since I've got it turned down to -7 in camera, I'm assuming there's something I should be doing in post to correct that. Unsharp mask? I'm editing in Premiere, Lumetri has a sharpness slider... Let me know if you thoughts of either of these issues. Here are some still frames straight out of the camera (4k has been scaled down to 1080). Sorry, I don't know the exact ISO for each.
