  1. I've been considering buying an a6300 as an upgrade for my older Canon 70D for a while now, since its video performance is becoming quite obsolete for my recent productions. I'm not willing to buy Sony substitutes for all my existing glass, which is the reason why I'm willing to buy a Metabones mkIV adapter as well. The thing is, all of the reviews and topics I've ever seen are always talking about its focusing abilities for stills - which, as I could see, is pretty fast and accurate with almost no haunting in most circumstances. I haven't seen, though, anyone talking about its video autofocus performance, which is what matters the most for me. In their limitations section, they say "Continuous AF and video AF are not supported. (Performance may be unsatisfactory.)". As far as I'm concerned, there's no big difference between stills and video autofocus since it's the same focusing system after all. Could someone give me some light about this? How does Metabones behave within video recording? Best regards, Guido.
  2. Just recently noticed that the WO button on my IV T adapter is no longer providing any tactile feedback. In other words, where it was lifting and depressing before, it is no longer providing any of that resistance/push after you actuate the button. It just kind of flops about with no tension. Anyone have this happen to them? If so, what was the fix? Hoping to be able to fix this ASAP as I only shoot adapted EF mount stuff on my Sony rig. Any help would be super greatly appreciated.
  3. I'll begin by stating that I'm not a wedding photography by trade. I shoot mostly commercial lifestyle and product professionally and landscape for fun. I've shot a good few event style jobs with Sony and back when I had Nikon, but this was the first wedding shoot on the Sony system. It was almost as if I was using a camera for the first time. I fumbled between the many prime lenses at my disposal (the sought after G Master 24-70 2.8 nowhere to be found) because I opted not to rent a second camera. I had a second shooter with two Canon bodies and delegated various things to him. What I brought with me for the A7Rii in my possession was as follows: - My 55 4/1.8 Zeiss (My favorite lens despite how long I have to spend de-fringing) - My 70 - 200 f/4 (which I didnt use as it's not fast enough...new 2.8 nowhere to be found!) - My 28 f/2 (which I used only during dancing and sparklers at the end of the night) - A rented 35 f/1.4 Zeiss (great bokeh, slow focus and horrible fringing on this body) - A rented Canon 85 f/1.2 with Metabones adaptor (insanely unreliable focus, softness, light leaks from adaptor, and notoriously horrible fringing) There you have it. I know I sound a little negative right now, but I'm only trying to emphasize the difficultly of said task in contrast to what I usually consider a fairly delightful shooting experience with Sony. I opted to stick mostly with the 85 and 35 rentals (silly perhaps) throughout the day and spend a great deal of time hunting for focus while my subjects bobbed about with the occasional calculated pose (thankfully). The camera encountered a deep internal error/freeze about 6-8 times while shooting with the adapted Canon and required about 15 seconds to turn off and back on. As you may or may know, turning the A7Rii on from a freeze often takes a great deal of time as it attempts to get itself back in order. I'm confident this was a Metabones issue. Not sure what version of its firmware I was operating, but it wasn't pretty. Sidenote: light leak from the adaptor could be solved by covering the sides of the adaptor with my hands (didn't have black tape available on short notice). The 35 Zeiss I've used before on several occasions. It's a pleasing lens with fairly slow focus as I mentioned above. My editing experience always proves to be a free-for-all of teals, blues, and purple variants--typically shades that Lightroom can't identify as fringing. Fun! Later in the evening this wouldn't be an issue, but midday and golden hour I spend a good amount of time shooting into the light with a plethora of lovely plants and trees scattered about my subjects. Once de-fringed, however, the lens delivers some great stuff. On par with the Sigma Art 35 roughly. Focus in general with the A7Rii (which is known to be lesser of mirrorless evils when it comes to this) is, of course, a bit of an Achilles heel. I depend on center focus to focus and re-compose as I've come not to rely on its otherwise abilities. With Sony lenses, the center focus bracket is rather large (is there a way to make this smaller and more precise I don't know about!?) when compared with Canon and Nikon DSLRs, so I'll often miss when trying to aim for a small subject at center frame. This leads to many mis-focuses in crowded environments with many subjects moving about. Another factor that made things difficult was how long the A7Rii took to buffer as I fired off large RAW files in burst (high speed of course because...well, I needed everything I could get). It would quickly fill the buffer attempting to write to my high speed cards, and when I went to chimp my shots I always had to wait a good bit until it was finished writing and could render a preview. I'm used to this (been shooting with the camera for 9 months now), but it was made painfully apparent during such a shoot. The large files rapidly filled up several cards (42 MP is certainly overkill for a wedding, but that's my choice). Exposure is another something I have trouble with at times. I find that the 35 Zeiss is a particular nuisance as it gives me unpredictable exposures when shooting on Aperture priority. I opted not to shoot manual very often as the lighting was constantly changing as we moved about the venue. I love the live-exposure preview feature of mirrorless EVF, but find that for me it seems inconsistent with the brightness displayed on the screen and a little too dark during daylight to get a feeling. In the EVF I could see details and the exposure looked nice, but when chimping on the screen (brightness turned up for day), highlights would appear very much blown out. I was shooting Ap-priority with my exposure compensation dial cranked to anywhere between (-0.75) and (-2.25) most of the day. Once back on my computer, I found that said underexposures did end up giving me typically slightly underexposed shots, but only by a small amount. I prefer this actually on the Sony, as I find that shadows recover more than its highlights in Lightroom. I think I have a good deal of great shots as I run through the catalogue, but there are likely a great deal less usables than if I had shot with a modern DSLR. Good thing i opted for that high-speed burst all day and had a second shooter! Overall, I love these cameras, I really do, but for professional use I really do think they should be giving those G-Master lenses away. Either that or these cameras ought to be sold for such a reasonable price that the G-Masters seem like a no-brainer. Really, I'm thankful to be able to use my Sony when shooting inanimate objects, landscapes, and slow-moving models. For scenarios such as this, I truly feel as if I entered a race and shot myself in the foot at the starting line.
  4. Hey folks, Im looking into buying a PL to E mount adapter. Ive done some research and landed on these 2. 1. Wooden Camera PL Lens to Sony E-Mount Camera Pro Adapter. 2. Metabones PL to E-Mount Adapter with Internal Flocking. What are your thoughts? Any other adapter that I should consider? Any advice would be appreciated. Cheers!
  5. Hey guys! No matter what I try I can't seem to change my aperture on my a7s ii. I am using the metabones adapter, however, it is up to date with the latest firmware. Anyone got any advice? Cheers.
  6. Model: Camilla Chun (great to work with) Sony A7RII, 2-Phottix Indra 360s, Mitros+TTL, Canon 24-70 2.8II L. Phottix Softboxes.
  7. Hi all I am a newbie in this forum and this is my first post. I am considering to buy the awesome Zeiss 135mm F/2 APO for my A7RII however I am not sure which mount (ZE or ZF.2) would be better. I have the Metabones IV adapter so the following would be pros and cons of each. I would like to hear the opinion of you all regarding this dilemma. ZE Mount Pros: ExiF data through the metabones adapter Full 5-Axis stabilisation through metabones (as it transfers the focal length and aperture information)---> I am not 100% sure on this better usability in studio with flash (s the aperture will stay open and close only for taking photo therefore the viewfinder will be nice and brighter Cons: Needs Metabones to change aperture Is only usable on Canon and Sony and due to lack of aperture ring and flange distance. Lower resale value due to #2 ZF.2 Mont Pros: Manual Aperture ring (Can work with cheap dump adapters) Works on any system with shorter flange distance (Nikon, Canon, Sony , Fuji, etc) Better resale value due to #2 potential autofocus with Techart Pro adapter (although its a bit heavy for it) Cons: No Exif 3-Axis stabilisation vs 5 axis. Dark view finder when used in studio I would really like to hear your options on this matter,
  8. I've been using my Sony A7R2 + Metabones IV with Sigma 35A and 50A as well as the Canon 16-35L for 2 months now. It's been working great, until last wedding the camera would not let me autofocus. I checked the switch -it was correctly set to AF, and the Focus Mode was greyed out in the Function Menu. I checked online and there was a quick fix to unmount the lens, hold the button on the metabones adapter, and reattach the lens and it would enable autofocus again. I had to do this about 4-5 times for the rest of the day. Anyone have this problem before and/or a solution to this? Is it firmware issues? I haven't updated it since I bought it from Amazon. Thanks.
  9. I just bought a Metabones EF-E adaptor Mark V, and a Sony A7 III body. Not delivered yet. I note that there is a very recent firmware update for the Metabones. Upon trying to download the Metabones app/firmware I find that I am unable to, because the Metabones web site is seemingly crippled and my downloads proceed at 3 KB/s (truly) until they of course time-out in a few minutes. I should mention that my Internet connection is fine and I can download movies, etc, at high speed. My question is: has anyone been able to obtain the latest Metabones app/firmware (v 3.1, either Windows or Mac is fine)? If so, could you please share it with me via a cloud service? Does the Metabones web site often stuff-up??? I am disgusted since I have paid $700 (in Australia) for the Metabones and apparently they cannot support it adequately. I have written to Metabones support but they have not replied. I am so annoyed that I have since ordered a Sigma MC-11 on the basis that at least they support their product with firmware updates. Your help with the Metabones firmware would be much appreciated. Regards, M.
  10. I am researching the Canon TS-E 17mm f4 lens to use for architecture. I would be interested to get some feedback from anyone using this lens with either the Metabones or Sigma adapters on either an A7ii or A7Rii body. Are there any functional issues affecting manual focus particularly focus peaking and focus assist magnification? Is there any loss of sharpness? Does auto exposure work correctly? I would really appreciate hearing from people with first hand experience of using this lens with either of these adapters. Many thanks.
  11. My canon lens's image stabilization isn't working ONLY when recording video in 24fps. In every other frame rate the image stabilizer will work for both photo and video. Image stabilizer works for photo when video is set at 24fps. Does anyone have a similar issue?
  12. Yesterday while I was doing nature photography I had to turn off the camera several times because it was hanging with the curtain up, nothing was visible on the display and in the EVF you could see the last photo shot and the focus points were blinking. The problem was presented with the following configuration Sony A7R III + Metabones V + Canon EF 400mm f / 5.6L USM AF-C Wide focus mode Did any of you have a similar problem?
  13. Hi, I want to know, Can you use a Sony Speedbooster to improve Sony Lenses ? SO for example instead of using Canon -> Sony Speedbooster, Can I not use a Sony -> Sony Lens to make the Lens a full frame lens with improved Aperture. Does it make sense?
  14. Hey everyone, Im new to sony alpha cameras and just got the A7s II so Im still trying to figure it out. I have the Metabones mark IV smart adapter but cannot get continous autofocus to work properly with my Canon EF lenses. Everything I google says that it should work with this adapter but every time i try to select AF C it says that its not available with the lens i have. Im mostly trying it with my canon 16-35 f/2.8L but i also tried with my canon 50mm f/1.4 and 85mm f/1.8 and it doesnt work for any of them. any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks.
  15. Hey! I have a problem with my Commlite EF-NEX adapter. Yesterday I mounted a Canon 24-105 with it on two different Sony Alpha 7s. Bith cameras are running firmware version 2.0. On one Aperture, stabilizer, ... was working. On the other, I couldn't change the F-Stop and the camera told me that I should mount the lens properly. In the exifs of the pictures from the second camera, there's no metadata about the lens at all. I thought the second camera might be broken, but with a speedbooster from metabones, mounting the lens was no problem at all and shooting with a sony lens as well. Where could the problem be? Software issues? Best Regards Felix
  16. Yesterday I was putting my A7r2 together with my Metabones IV adaptor and a Canon 24-105mm. I had updated the firmware on both to the latest official releases the week before. (body version 1.1 and adaptor version 44) When I turned the lens to manual focus... by some miracle, it auto-magnified to help me focus, just as it is supposed to do with Sony lenses (I assume, because I don't have those lenses). Anyway, it must have been a glitch, because after playing around with this new feature, and loving it... I decided to switch lenses... and it went away completely! I have not seen this come back, but I suspect it was some combination of turning on the camera and putting the lenses/adaptor on that fooled the electronics into thinking it was a Sony lens. The point is, that it is possible to do this, just a software update... the Canon lens will pass the manual focus information through the adaptor to the body to let it know when I'm focusing. I wish it was enabled on non-Sony lenses, it's a great feature that helps you get perfectly manual-focused shots quickly.
  17. I just updated the firmware in my Metabones Smart Adapter IV from .41 to .43 (released Sept 17) and auto focus now works with A7RII and Canon EF 400mm f/5.6. With version .41 it wouldn't stop hunting.
