  1. Hi all, I'm a long time reader / first time poster with a quick question about autofocus for video on the A7rii. This topic is covered a lot online, and I'm clear on how to use AFC with video (currently on wide). It works pretty well. The only issue is, often when you're shooting, you can't really see what the camera is focusing on until you review the footage on a larger screen. Peaking works of course, but only in manual focus mode. Sometimes face tracking does what I am saying, by drawing a while box around a face. Obviously if I hold down the shutter, I get a green box on what is in focus, but of course it's impossible to shoot like this. So the issue is, all of these are useless if I'm on AFC in video mode, and there isn't a face in the shot. It would be great if there was a way to turn on peaking in AFC, or if there was some display (green/white boxes) that existed in this mode... Am I missing something somewhere in the settings? Thanks!
  2. I've been considering buying an a6300 as an upgrade for my older Canon 70D for a while now, since its video performance is becoming quite obsolete for my recent productions. I'm not willing to buy Sony substitutes for all my existing glass, which is the reason why I'm willing to buy a Metabones mkIV adapter as well. The thing is, all of the reviews and topics I've ever seen are always talking about its focusing abilities for stills - which, as I could see, is pretty fast and accurate with almost no haunting in most circumstances. I haven't seen, though, anyone talking about its video autofocus performance, which is what matters the most for me. In their limitations section, they say "Continuous AF and video AF are not supported. (Performance may be unsatisfactory.)". As far as I'm concerned, there's no big difference between stills and video autofocus since it's the same focusing system after all. Could someone give me some light about this? How does Metabones behave within video recording? Best regards, Guido.
  3. Hi I have a request for A7RII owners with a 85mm G-Master lens. I have a very strange issue. I have a a7Rii and when i put de 85mm G-Master on my camera, with camera off but battery in the camera, it will NOT autofocus on a subject beyond 30 feet AND I am not able to MANUAL focus beyond 30 feet, belive it or not... This is fixed by removing the battery from the camera and put it back in, then the lens on the camera does autofocus and manual focus to infinity again. Can someone check if he/she has the same problem so I know I need to take the lens in for repairs.
  4. I am using a Sony a7r2 with the 16-35 f4 and have a weird issue with triggering the camera with IR on a drone I can trigger the camera with infra red if it’s handheld or on a tripod but as soon as I place it on my gimbal it will only fire in manual focus mode. I’m using a servo to trigger an infra red and if I tilt the camera down about 45 degrees the camera will fire in autofocus, however if I tilt it up it won’t fire. I have tried every setting imaginable and also shielding the IR with no success. I am using the exact same set up that I had with a Sony A7R, it fired every time in autofocus with the Sony A7R, but not with the Sony A7R2, I’m forced to use manual focus.
  5. This is a brief summary of the problem: The megaissue is with the Sony A7rII (but guess it’s applicable to other ILCEs too) and the two new GM lenses (24-70 and 85). Maybe it's applicable to other lenses too but I can't confirm as I don't have them. I confirm there are no issues with old Sony Zeiss 55 and 16-35 zoom. The issue is related to the the iris not opening while focusing with the 85 1.4 and 24-70 2.8GM. Setting Effect ON/OFF toggle setting has no effect (mine is always on OFF anyway). Practically speaking, you can’t focus accurately in normal dimly lit studio situations when shooting over f4. Iris stay closed while focusing and focus accuracy and speed drop. If you have to shoot at f8 (and in studio that’s the norm, but f5.6 proved impossible too) you can’t really focus at all unless you’ve a lot of ambient light too, even manually because the same accuracy drop is in the viewfinder, stopped down you can’t see the exact focus point even in manual focus when zoomed because the image is too coarse and spoiled by digital grain. It's a total show stopper. Previously I was using a Metabones/Canon 24/70 and Canon 85 combo with optimal results but I mistakenly thought that the new Sony duo would have been a wonderful choice and actually they are, but only when shooting wide open or almost wide open. Stopped down the focus is simply unusable and even worse prone to errors. My question is: does anybody know if Sony is aware of the issue and is going to fix it? Why they did such a big mistake with the new GM lenses? I’ve checked online and it's not my problem, other people working professionally noticed the very same issue. You can find a detailed description of the issue on diglloyd just to quote one. http://diglloyd.com/blog/2016/20160419_1756-SonyA7R_II-SonyGM-focusingBug.html He finds that even at f4 accuracy drops below the acceptable range. My results at f4 were slightly better but probably because people moves all the time so there are more chances that they move also towards the focus point. If I need to shoot at f8 with studio flashes how can I focus this way? I can't realistically open iris and then close before every single click. Des somebody know of any engineer’s email that I can contact about this? Is there a way to contact a Sony developer directly? You know, writing to support emails is totally useless for such critical but very peculiar issuers… Thanks everybody for any help. Maurizio Camagna http://camagna.it
  6. I recently purchased an a7R II along with a Sony FE 24-70 f/2.8 GM lens (SEL2470GM). I bought the lens on eBay. It was listed as manufacturer refurbished and does appear to be genuine and in excellent condition. Both the camera and lens are working great for the most part. However, I was surprised to discover that the lens is not capable of phase detection autofocus. I have updated the camera firmware to ver 3.30. I cannot find any firmware updates for the lens, which is running ver 01. When using AF-C, the lens hunts for focus continuously with rapid, jittery movements. It takes a long time to get a lock even if the aperture is wide open and the subject is brightly lit and not moving. Meanwhile, AF-S works beautifully. In the settings, Phase Detect. Area and AF System are grayed out along with a message that says “Invalid with this lens.” Along with plenty of Googling, I have scoured Sony's website and B&H for some mention of phase detection in their descriptions of this or any Sony FE lens. It does not seem to be a spec that they ever list. Yet, I believe at least some lenses are compatible with PD. I found one post on this site that indicated that the Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 (SEL50F18F) works with PD. And I saw a post about a lower-end zoom that supposedly works. So I have a few questions: As in the title: Does the Sony FE 24-70 f/2.8 GM support phase detection AF on the a7R II? I would be surprised that a native lens from their premium GM line would not, and some posts have indicated that all Sony native lenses should be PD capable. I know that A-mount lenses can even use PD with an adaptor. If some Sony native E-mount lenses are not compatible with phase detection, which ones are? I can't find a list anywhere, and like I said, there is never any mention of it in the specs. If you have a FE 24-70 f/2.8 GM, what firmware version does it have? Thanks!
  7. It is really annoying that when I am video recording with continuous AF mode and I half press the shutter that my camera does refocus. Is there a way to turn this off??? In the stills menu you can turn off AF with shutter, but this doesn't work for video. I hope there is someone that can help me!
  8. From the album: Birds In Flight

Captured using the Sony A7RII with Sony 70-200 F4 FE lens. 140mm / F6.3 / 1/2000 / ISO 400 (auto ISO). I used the Wide Focus Area with Continuous Focus. This turned on focus tracking. I then used the back (AF/MF) button to turn on focusing and activated the shutter in bursts as the bird flew. The tracking worked excellently. About 90% of all my shots were in sharp focus.

  11. I used to own the A7sII and I remember when I would shoot in low light, the camera/viewfinder would expose up to see the image and grab focus on the subject and then when the shutter was pressed it would go back to the settings I had initially setup. I thought this was an awesome feature because I could see the image/composition before snapping the photo. Is there a way to do this with the A7RIII? Thanks for the help! 12. Hej, this might be a more unusual question, but I definately do not feel up to solving this on my own anymore. I have a Sony a37 camera which has, as stated in the topic, developed a rather strange AF problem. When the camera is switched on and set to P, A, S, M, or the other two automatic modes and you try to take a picture, the AF does not work, nothing happens at all. However, when you switch from AF to MF, take a picture and then switch back to AF, it works just fine. When in "Flash off" mode the AF works just fine even though sometimes the flash pops up without being actually used. When a flash is added to to hotshoe, everything works just fine. I have tried resetting the camera, leaving the battery out for a longer time, nothing has worked so far. The Firmware Version is 1.04 so I can not update it again. I have tested it with a lot of different lenses, Sony SAL 1650, SAM 1855, Tamron di2 16-270, very cheap Tamron 18-200, Minolta 28-135, Big Beercan, different Minolta, Sigma and Sony primes etc. If anyone has an Idea on how I could try to solve this problem I would be very grateful to hear it, if not then hopefully it was entertainning hearing about another strange problem Thanky in advance, Michael.
  13. Hi everybody, I have a Sony A7R and the other day I tried to shoot a timelapse with my 24-70 f4 (I normally use my Samyang 14mm) and I set everything manual. Buy after a while the lens went back to autofocus or something because some of the images turned out blurry (just some of them). Does anybody know why this could be and how to solve it?? I have tried to find a solution or a forum where this is discussed but I haven't found anything. Thank you very much in advance.
  14. I am interested in the A7R ii as a video camera for wildlife. Although most videographers shun autofocus, I think we are evolving into video autofocus and this interests me in that I do not want to be trying to pull focus on fast moving animals or birds in flight. The issue seems to be that the lock on focus modes are only there for the native e-mount lenses and there are no e-mount lenses long enough for most wildlife video. I was thinking that the sony A-mount 70-400G2 with the LA-Ea3 adapter would be about the best choice to keep as many of the video autofocus functions as possible. However, can't find anyone who has used this combination for sports or other fast moving subjects. I understand that the lock on will not work with the A-mount lenses, but was thinking that the autofocus in video would perhaps still be good enough. Anyone with thoughts or experience with long lenses on the A7Rii and fast moving subjects?
  15. Hey everyone, Im new to sony alpha cameras and just got the A7s II so Im still trying to figure it out. I have the Metabones mark IV smart adapter but cannot get continous autofocus to work properly with my Canon EF lenses. Everything I google says that it should work with this adapter but every time i try to select AF C it says that its not available with the lens i have. Im mostly trying it with my canon 16-35 f/2.8L but i also tried with my canon 50mm f/1.4 and 85mm f/1.8 and it doesnt work for any of them. any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks.
  16. Hello, About a year ago I bought my 50mm (SAL50F18) and since then I let it on my camera (wich is a SLT A37) almost all the time. Yesterday in a attempt to make a timelapse I tried to set my camera in other modes beyond the Program Auto but the camera returned me the following message: MF Invalid when AF/MF Select is set to Autofocus. Available with Manual Focus Is that had any relation with the fact that I almost never disassembly my lens from the camera? Because I can set to A/S/M mode when I try to use my 18-55mm (which I use sometimes) And yes for both I switch the lens and camera autofocus to MF, actually I just shoot in MF.
  17. It was announced imminent a year ago. Where is it? It seems to me it would be the real game changer. Can't believe that the z-axis stabilisation in the new 7II has nothing to do with it...
  18. Hi, I've been looking into buying a new camera for a while, and am leaning strongly towards the Sony A7 II. I currently only have an old Nikon D80 with a couple of APS-C DX lenses at my disposal, so I don't have any current equipment to take into consideration. This is all for personal enjoyment only, and apart from stills (mainly street and travel photography) I am planning to get into making some videos (starting with a small budget slider and perhaps some adapted legacy lenses, equipment-wise). For stills I would prefer to have autofocus, but my budget does not allow me to buy native FE lenses that cover the wide angle and normal zoom (anything longer is a bonus) I also really want lenses faster than f/4. With this in mind I've been thinking about the current setup: - Sony A7II - LA-EA4 Adapter - Tamron SP AF 17-35 mm f/2.8-4 - Tamron or Konica-Minolta AF 28-75 mm f/2.8 - Minolta AF 70-210 mm f/4 "Beercan" I have read that the LA-EA4 adapter (seemingly by design, as it is mentioned in the manual as I understand) for some reason disables the AF assist light which might make autofocus unusable in low light (for example in a nightclub). I have seen one person mention in a forum that on the A7II the AF assist light DOES actually work together with the adapter, but that the light might be useless with the adapted lenses actually obscuring the AF assist light. I would like to hear from anybody who has direct experience with using the LA-EA4 together with the Sony A7II, and whether the AF assist light works or not? I'm also interested in any feedback on whether it is at all a good idea to rely primarily on A-mount lenses on the A7II. Thank you.

  20. Hi there guys, I set up a shoot with a skateboarder here in cape town to see how well the A7 can handle fast paste shoots. Since this is the topic most people complain about with mirrorless cameras it handled surprisingly well. Head over to my blog to read it all and see the pictures: http://passportsandlenses.com/about-skateboards-comfort-zones-and-af-systems/ Let me know what you think and how you think the sony's can hold their owns against DSLRs. Best, Alex
