  1. Hi. Anybody know how to stop this happening when recording on a Sony a7sii? Shooting XAVC S 4K, 25P 60M, Shutter 1/50 Every few minutes throughout the recording white blocks appear for over the image for one frame. Thanks
  2. I recently finished a short travel film called The World Before Me, shot this year on a round the world trip with my a7S II. This was a huge learning experience for me and I've written a series or articles about the process. If you're interested in watching the film or reading the posts Here's the link: https://medium.com/@dcbryan/mirrorless01-73de6acf2697
  3. Hello there! My first post here is a long one, so I've made headlines hoping this will make it more clear and easier to navigate quickly. Background information: I like both photography and videography and I'm looking for a hybrid camera which does both really well and also has an ergonomic form factor. I currently own a Canon 40D which balances very well with my 70-200mm f4 IS lens and a full sized speedlight when I take pictures at conferences and events. The grip on the 40D is large and secure so I can easily hold on to this combination even when taking pictures in portrait orientation where the weight of the speedlight adds rotational force on the camera as it sticks out to the side. I need a full sized speedlight as I almost exclusively use bounce flash at conferences. I also own a Panasonic GH3 which form factor I like very much for video. I find the fully articulating touch screen a joy to use. I also use the GH3 at conferences with a 12-35mm zoom lens to compliment the 40D. However the GH3 does not balance very well with a full sized flash and the hotshoe also broke off after light use. I've had it repaired but now I use a TTL-cord to the speedlight, so I don't put too much weight on the hotshoe. My 40D is getting old and I'm hoping to upgrade. I've looked at the 80D which seems to be a very nice camera except it appears Canon has decided reserve high quality video to its cinema line of cameras. Therefore I've been looking at Sony's offerings which seem to do both photography and video at a very high level. Fuji also came to mind, but I'd prefer a system which has both APSC and full frame offerings. I'm aware of the A99II, but having Canon lenses I'm more attracted to the e-mount, as it allows me to use my existing lenses while trying out the Sony system. So far Sony's e-mount appears to cater to the current trend of miniaturizing cameras. I posted the below question in a videography oriented forum, and everyone who responded seemed to prefer smaller cameras. I guess my wish for a camera that also balances well with a full sized speedlight separates me from most video shooters. I think this forum is visited by people who are more or less interested in both photography and video. Therefore I'm curious to see what people here would answer to the below question, so please let your voice be heard and feel free to elaborate in the comments: Question: Would you be interested in a Sony a6500 and a Sony a7RII, a7SII in a Canon 80D form factor? Please note: I'm not advocating that Sony should increase the size of the a6xxx or a7x series. I'm wishing that they make a separate camera line with the same technology used in the a6xxx and a7x cameras, but in a larger DSLR-like form factor like the Canon 80D. Personally I really like the ergonomics of Canon DSLRs. However, I believe mirrorless cameras are the future, and Canon's offerings don't appeal to me. I also see the advantages of having small compact mirrorless cameras like the a6500. They are great for traveling light when used with pancake lenses, great for keeping a low profile, great for gimbal use etc. I would just like the same technology to be available in a larger more ergonomic body as well. I don't see why all mirrorless cameras per definition must be small. The definition of mirrorless, as I understand it, simply means an interchangeable lens camera without a mirror. Here are some of the main reasons, in no particular order, for me wanting a larger form factor à la the Canon 80D. 1) A larger grip makes using the camera more secure and comfortable when shooting for a prolonged time - especially for those with larger hands 2) Larger buttons and controls with a bit more space between them makes operation less "cramped" - again especially for those with larger hands 3) Better balance when using a large lens and a full sized speedlight on camera - important for those of us using large lenses and a lot of bounce flash 4) Room for a fully articulating touch screen 5) Room for a larger heatsink to further reduce the risk of overheating 6) Room for dual card slots 7) Room for a headphone port (already there on the a7-series) 8) Room for a larger battery 9) Perhaps room for a full sized HDMI port I understand that there are rumors about a larger more professional camera series above the a7 line, currently dubbed the a9. However, I'm "just" a hobbyist, and it would be very hard for me to justify spending 3500-5000 USD on a single camera. Therefore I really wish Sony would also make available cameras that both have a more ergonomic form factor and are in a price range accessible for enthusiasts. I think they would win over many DSLR-users, both professionals and enthusiasts like myself, if they did that. Sony has stated that they are committed to both the e-mount and a-mount, which makes me wonder if they've reserved the more ergonomic DSLR form factor for the a-mount. I hope not.
  4. Hi I just got my a7sii for some reason I am not getting the 120 fps option in recording settings. I am set to XAVC S HD but only get 50p (50), 25p (50), 100p (100), 100p (60) Strange not sure if I am doing something wrong or need a bigger memory card inserted to access the feature?
  5. I put together an AF-C comparison using 5 different native FE mount lenses on the a7sii, hope you find it helpful https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fP4VHnej42E Let me know what you think and what other tests would be helpful.
  6. new to this forum... I've updated my a7sii to the v2.1 firmware which I understood supported 4K RAW video recording... Am I misunderstanding? I don't see any new options in the camera's menus. Is 4K video always saved as an .mp4 file? This is a lossy format. Is there no lossless format supported? Can anyone suggest a good how-to video tutorial covering 4K video for this camera? Thanks in advance. -- Dave.
  7. Hi guys, Need some tech info here.... Based in the UK and looking to film with my a7sii in some high frame rates to take advantage of slow motion in editing. Set to PAL as it seems to get rid of light flicker with the UK stuff over here. So.....MP4 gives a max of 60fps which is cool but I want even slower so I've had to set to XAVC HD instead to use the 100+fps which is great. However......I usually switch between 24mm 35mm 50mm Samyang full frame primes when filming but (on XAVC format) after i hit record it crops itself automatically, it didn't do this on MP4, so now everything looks like an 85mm lens?! Basically I want to use the best codec that will give me HUGE fps for slow motion, full frame use of all my lenses and in an NTSC or PAL format that combats the UK frequency of lights etc. Any helpers?? Appreciate it as always
  8. Hi All, I have Sony A7Sii from the last one month and have couple of concerns. Earlier I have been using 5d miii for my video and now have started using a7sii My Concerns are 1. I have been using picture profile PP4, PP7 (pretty much flat profile) but struggling in doing color correction/grading in order to get colors like canon 2. When I am using play memory app like smart remote, the quality of video footage is very crisp, how that is happening? is it overwriting camera profile? and what setting is that I REALLY LIKE it. 3. Video captured in the low light with high ISO have grains, how can I rid of them in post-production, I am using both Premiere pro and Final cut pro. 4. Any useful training for as7ii
  9. Hi guys, theres banding THEN THERES BANDING. Theres flicker THEN THERES FLICKER. This....I have no idea what this is... HUGE thick lines across the screen that basically turn that specific ones area into black and white. The lines don't move up and down like conventional 'flickering' and its across the entire screen instead of just colours like conventional 'banding'the lines just stay there constant f*cking my sh*t up. Filming in pal and shutter speed changes have no effect on it at all, it almost looks like its burned into the sensor. Please don't talk to me about frequency etc cause this isn't simple 'flicker.' Any help would be much appreciated.
  10. In August, I travelled for one day along the famous Ring of Kerry in Ireland. I wanted to capture some of the vibrance and beauty of the places along the ring. Using a rented Sony a7sii and extra gear, I explored the area for shots. Hope you enjoy the short travel film and can share around as you please. All the best, Nathanael
  11. Hi everyone, first post here. Hoping someone can help me with this issue: When using my z-finder pro (that works perfectly with my 5d mark iii) with the A7sii, I find that the A7sii display items, like histogram, f-stop, shutter speed, etc, only display in the z-finder when shooting in 1080p. In other words, if I shoot at 60fps or 120fps at 1080p, I can see all the display items. But when I select 4K, I can only see the image I am shooting in the viewfinder and none of the other display overlays. So if I want to check my histogram or any other settings I have to look on the lcd screen of the camera. They will not display within the z-finder. This has happened with a rental A7sii that I currently have. Am thinking about buying this camera but if I cannot get display overlays to appear in z-finder in 4K, it becomes less of an option as I would have no idea where my exposure is by looking into the z-finder. I would have to constantly check the back screen of the camera. Again, it works perfectly in any of the 1080p modes. Just not 4K. Does the hdmi signal out change somehow in 4K mode? I'm stumped. Firmware for z-finder pro is the most recent version. Any thoughts? Thanks very much. -Mark
  12. Hello, I've bought an A7Sii some time ago, switching from a canon and I'm pretty impressed so far. I have now tried to record externally. The recorder does support 4k and HD. My issue though is, that as soon as i plug in the HDMI cable the camera outputs 4k via HDMI and I have no idea how to switch it to HD, if I only want to record HD. Can anyone help me fix this issue? Thanks, mxmtsk
  13. I'm using an a7sii, with 85 lens, and Ronin M. I'm shooting two people wrestling. I'm having all types of problems focusing because the wrestling is dynamic so there is a fair amount of movement. Ultimately, the focus drifts off and then finds itself after a few seconds, but this severely compromises the film. My settings F/2.8, shutter 100, continuous focus, wide, face recognition on If I was simply using the camera on its own, I would hold the shutter button until focus is reached and I could move around, but this is impossible with the Ronin because you are using both hands to hold the gimbal. I don't have $2,000 for some follow focus attachment so what suggestions would you have for such a project? Another point is that face recognition is great when your subject is facing you directly, but in my scenario, I'm often shooting the tops/backs/sides of the faces, so the focus won't immediately recognize that its a face to focus on. Should I switch to a wide lens like a 35? Any suggestions?
  14. Shooting 1080p at 50fps gives me footage that isn't good quality. I am seeing what I can call aliasing and moire issues. Footage looks this way straight out of the camera, so it is nothing to do with post processing on my part. I performed some tests where i shot the same subject at 25fps and again at 50fps. The 25 fps looks much much better. I am setting shutter speed to 1/100 with 50 fps and 1/50 with 25 fps. Other setting such as pp are the same. All this time I thought that it's me doing something wrong, but now I am starting to think that there is a problem with the camera.. Is there anybody who experienced this?
  15. Hi there, Looking to get a new camera, it's becoming painful because I'm changing my mind almost hourly at the moment. I've got it down to two options. A7sii or the a6500. Both shoot 4k and 1080 at 120fps, which is what I'm after. Can't decide what to get. Leaning towards the a6500 because of the autofocusing benefits. Thoughts? Thanks in advance.
  16. I'll try to keep this as concise as possible, and there will be several questions. Thanks so much in advance for your help! Intro: I used the input from this forum to convert to mirrorless last year. I have an A7 ii, zeiss 35mm, and zeiss batis 85mm. My skill has improved greatly and I'm loving the Sony Alpha system in general. I do not like the autofocus system of the A7ii but I know how to work around it and know the A7r ii would fix my photo problems. Lastly, I understand post processing well and have never shot in anything but RAW - so haven't explored the opportunities with internal mode settings (JPEG-softskin etc). That being said, when I start shooting video, I'm comfortable with color grading from scratch and using LUTS for quick editing and fine tuning them. The Ask: My employer has asked me to build content for our company. We are an aerial imagery and analytics company based out of SF serving all of North America but are still in the mid-start/growth stage. I have a budget of $5K for gear. In that, I must shoot drone video. I need 2 cameras in total for video interviews. Specs and Workflow: I can crank out photos all day with my current A7ii, but I'm worried about video which I have little experience with. So if I'm getting a new camera, I immediately thought A7rii (used). Then I got to thinking about the A7Sii (used). The problem is SloMo. No one is producing anything interesting or cinematic in the Agriculture space so its time someone took this old industry's content seriously. I'll have access to airplanes as well, so shoots could be epic! That being said, I'd like to keep things as simple as I can. I'm thinking 2 cameras and a drone. First thought, A7rii and Phantom 4 Pro. Phantom 4 Pro (P4P) has a 1 inch Exmor Sony Sensor and can shoot buttery smooth 4K. P4P I am sure will be my choice there. Because I'll be shooting lots of agriculture scenes (think mostly row cropping - corn, soy, wheat fields), I need to be careful with moire. I am bummed the A7rii doesn't shoot 4K at 60fps (correct me if I'm wrong please). I have a GoPro Hero6 for personal use and that thing is insanely good at slomo. I need to be shooting in 4K, it needs to be cinematic, it needs to be as simple as possible. Am I totally missing something here? I can always sell my A7ii, upgrade to A7rii, then go for something that shoots buttery 4K (black magic? ugh). Feeling overwhelmed with choices here. Someone please make it easy on me ha. Again, Thanks so much for all of your help.
  17. Spent a month in Peru shooting this short travel film. Shot with A7sii, a6300 and Mavic Pro. Would love for everyone here to check it out. Thanks!
  18. Has anyone successfully rigged up this gimbal setup? Currently having quite the time... Gimbal: Ikan Beholder EC-1 (Holds up to 4.5lbs) Camera: Sony A7sii (1lb, 6oz) Lens: Sony Vario Tessar Zeiss 24-70/f4 (15oz) Additional: Sony XLR-K2M XLR Adapter kit (13.1oz) Any thoughts or links that might be helpful? I've watched the Ikan setup video but they use a 35/2.8 lens and no XLR mount.
  19. When my display settings are set to "Auto" yet the "Auto" doesn't seem to be working at all. Visuals stay in the Viewfinder unless I switch to "Monitor (Manual)" in which case the monitor works. I've cleaned the viewfinder, but to no avail. I saw one other thread on this, but it didn't really elaborate on anything. Anyone else have this issue? If so, were you able to fix without sending to Sony? Thanks in advance.
  20. here is a test video i made to try some grading stuff shot on sony a7s ii s-log3 you can download the 3D lut here : https://www.dropbox.com/s/yrp69vvj6f126ir/bojiFIlm.cube?dl=0
  21. Hi I have a very strange problem with sound on a7s2 If I record video (in all formats) in playback on the camera almost cant here the sound, but if I put headphones – sound is ok More strange – if I open footages on computer – everything is ok, but if I open footages on the timeline in Premiere – the sound is very low, almost unhearable, ( timeline settings – DNx) If I put timeline settings to dslr 1080 – sound is ok, but after the export (tried in all formats) if I upload footage to the Facebook or Instagram – no sound on smartphones (both android and Iphones), but with headphones everything is ok. On the computers everything works. The same in Davinchi Resolve – on the timeline everything is ok, but after the export in FB or Instagram – no sound on smartphones (only with headphones) I’ve tried to render the footages in different formats, even only sound in mp3, wav, then put back on premiere timeline - after the export – the same in FB and Instagram More strange – even if I use screen recorder and record that footage and after that put it on the premiere timeline and make export – the same – no sound on smartphones in FB and Instagram (sound only with headphones)
  22. Hi Does anybody else struggle manual focusing on the a7sii screen, its almost impossible for me to work without a external monitor!. i use the zoom in focus feature, but it doesn't seem to help, when the clips are exported they are always sharp, but always look blurred on the a7sii screen like the led screen isnt in focus ! Any Help Thanks
  23. Hello there, sony shooters! It is my first post here. I searched a lot but I couldn't find any solution related to my problem. So it goes like this: I have Sony A7s II and I had attached 50mm f/1.8 lens on it. When I was switching my camera to continuous autofocus, it was starting to hunt for a focus, never mind it was night or day, it was at 1.8 or 9, it was hunting for a focus hopelessly. Then I bought Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 and again, it started hunting for a focus. This happens if camera is standby and I press shutter button for focus during photo. But if I switch it on video mode, everything is perfect and everything works very well. Even when I shoot video AF is great, Eye-AF also works perfectly, but when I want to shoot, say, my running dog, every image is out of focus. Did any of you have such an issue? What's a problem? I tried every focus mode but problem continues. Edited: I almost missed that it Tamron and Sony 50mm lens worked perfectly on a73. Thanks for your attention and sorry, if such post existed before. If so, please link me Happy shooting!
  24. Hi, i am having the strangest issue with my A7SII and i wanted to ask you guys if i am overlooking something or if Sony actually made a huge mistake here: Last Week i took the time to go through every Container/Codec Combination the A7SIi offers and wrote down the estimated Time the Camera tells me i can record on a freshly formatted 64GB SD Card. Here are my results: (I gave (nearly) matching times the same font color) XAVCS 4K 25p 100M 1h21m 25p 60M 2h11m XAVCS HD 50p 50M 2h39m 25p 50M 2h39m 100p 100M 1h21m 100p 60M 2h11m AVCHD 50i 24M(FX) 6h12m 50i 17M(FH) 8h29m 50p 28M(PS) 5h16m 25p 24M(FX) 6h12m 25p 17M(FH) 8h29m MP4 1920x1080 50p 28M 5h32m 1920x1080 25p 16M 8h39m 1280x720 25p 6M 22h36m Notice, how 25p 100M XAVCS 4k and 100p 60M XAVCS HD have the same time? I understand that, because 4K is four times as big as 1080p, so with the same bitrate i could get four times as many frames in a second and two clips with the same length should take the same space on my SD Card. I also understand AVCHD 50i 24M vs. 25p 24M: Two half-frames should take the same space as one Full-Frame. What i do NOT understand however is XAVCS HD 50p 50M vs. XAVCS HD 25p 50M. The second should have a time twice as long shouldn't it? Can someone please check if their A7SII behaves the same? Or, if i am missing something, point that out to me? I double and triple checked my results and i already did a test to see if 50p 50M is really 50p, not 50i, but it seems to be progressive. Two things worth noting are: I am still on Firmware v2.4 OS Language is set to German (my native Language) Help, please :/ Thanks!
  25. Recently the record and middle button on the Dial/Wheel on my a7sii just stopped working. without that middle button i can not select anything on my camera so i can't access anything on the menu like the Setting reset cause basically i don't have an "enter" or "select" button. i can scroll through the menu but cant select anything so i cant reset from the menu so I am searching for a way to reset to factory settings without using the menu, and i don't think there is a reset button on the body. So if anyone can help with a way to reset like sometimes they the "turn on while pushing down XXX buttons". if anyone has that info it is very much appreciated Jorge González
