  1. Sony has never put camera serial numbers in the metadata, so Sony owners have not had the benefit of the very convenient feature of Adobe Camera Raw that associates development presets -- most important, color profiles -- with specific cameras. I shoot a lot of stereo pairs and it is essential that each photo gets processed with the proper profile. Recent Alpha models do have an "Internal Serial Number" in the metadata, but ACR does not recognize this. However it is possible to convert it into a proper "Serial Number" with exiftool. Here is the command for converting a batch of raw files: exiftool "-SerialNumber<InternalSerialNumber" *.ARW The quotes are needed to prevent the Windows shell from interpreting the < as a file redirect. You must do this before importing the images into LightRoom, because Adobe makes a private copy of the metadata at import, and ignores any subsequent changes in the ARW files. The batched ARW files can be from different cameras. I have tested this with ARW files from the a7r and a6000. The NEX series don't have "Internal Serial Number" so you still have to manage those by hand. To see if a file is a candidate for conversion, or has been converted, you can use exiftool -*SerialNumber name.ARW If exiftool displays one line like: Internal Serial Number : 34ffc409 then the file is convertible. If it displays nothing, it is not. Or it may show that the file already has a Serial Number: Internal Serial Number : 21ff740d Serial Number : 21ff740d
  2. A7 Mark II using Batis 85 shot wide open at f1.8. 1/1600 second at ISO 100. Developed in Lightroom using Pretty Presets. 25% of saturation removed.
  3. I spent some time today moving some photos to a backup hard drive. Then I was trying determine why my MacBook Pro (500GB storage) had so much space devote to pictures. I went through each folder in the Pictures directory and found 50 GB of memory in the Lightroom folder. Upon further inspection, I saw that each backup over the last three years was still there. THAT IS NOT NECESSARY. So I deleted (moved to the trash can) all the Lightroom Backups except the most recent one. Then I emptied the trash can. Each photo I store is over 30 MB. That can really add up. I certainly need to do a better job of deleting old photos and duplicates. And really watch the panorama shots. I had one that was over 500 MB! And of course video can really use up a lot of memory in a hurry. The Adobe website has more info on backups.
  4. I got this today and thought some of the forum members that are just learning Lightroom could benefit from some tutorials: https://www.lightroompresets.com/blogs/pretty-presets-blog/14346905-100-free-adobe-lightroom-tutorials I have personally purchased Lightroom presets from this site and watched some free webinars they offer. Of course their goal is to get you to buy their "stuff". Buyer beware.
  5. Hi there, Sorry If this a bit misplaced in the forum but I’d really liked to throw this question to (sony) users rather than any pre-sales support. I've just tested Capture One for few minutes and wondering if I'm wasting time. Initially it feels to fail on the same criteria as Darktable and Corel's Aftershot Pro (sadly these are the only linux alternatives). I hope I'm wrong.. but I can’t actually find any tutorial or any relevant information online on bulk editing images with Capture One. (Just exporting). Anyway in LR I really like the “Auto tuning” possibilities. What I mean is that before even digging into invidual images the software can adjust the exposure, lens correction and even having LR to guess the white balance in just very few steps I can get everything to more neutral state. It's not instant but I can enjoy a cup of coffee in between so It's not a problem. I'm not afraid to leave my finger on the shutter just to get the right moment, so therefor the amount of files tend to pile up. A template or not doesn't matter as long as it's an easy workflow without lots of manual steps. Corel's Aftershot is a terrible example of static templates how the software is non-aware of the content, templates would be only usable if all images are the same cause it really just applies static settings, which is just tragic. Any can Capture One Pro do this? Thanks in advance for any input.
  6. When I first attached my new A7R to my new MacBook it would not connect at all. I then tried it on my older iMac and the Live View set to USB PC Remote worked. After several contacts with Apple, Sony and Phase One (Capture One), I installed new A7R firmware and Remote Camera Control software. I finally got it to work on the Macbook BUT no Live View, just tether. I then tried it again on the iMac and it no longer worked??? Only after several hours of trial and error what I ended up with is that I can tether the A7R in Capture One but no Live View - its not supported for this. I got this camera specifically to shoot tethered and have Live View in Capture One. So after spending a lot on hardware and software all I got was tether. I already had that with Lightroom for Hasselblad but Sony is not supported by Adobe. All this proprietary stuff is complete nonsense and a waste of time. Welcome to the 21st century - Not! Very disappointed with Sony, Phase One and Lightroom. I really regret having made these investments.
  7. Hi Forum, A short post to let you know that Capture One Pro 9.1 has been released which includes support for the A6300 as well as the A68 and a revised support of the RX1R MkII. Read more about it here and download... https://www.phaseone.com/nineone Lots of new features and improvements on the old. David Phase One A/S
  8. Huge 40 MB RAW files from A7rII challenge previous storage and backup workflow schemas. Here is what I use currently. Nothing special, but it's simple and works well for me. Background -- I'm a ballet photographer, shooting about 20-30 full length ballets around the world per year. My current run rate is about 2 TB of RAW photos per year. My main camera is Sony A7rII, average file size is abt 41 MB. I've used different scenarios, but currently using following one. 1. I import all photos from SD cards to Lightroom. My PC has super fast M.2 512 GB SSD storage and also 10 TB HDD. I keep my Lightroom catalogue and all previews on M.2 SSD and all RAW photos on 10 TB disk. I've tried also to import last "hot" shoot to SSD, but I did not encounter big performance increase, but added manual routines, moving later files to slower 10 TB drive. 2. All shoots are organised into collection sets and collections in lightroom, all photos are properly tagged during the import and additional specific tags are added later. So its easy to find everything later and track down to specific collection. 3. All photos on 10 TB HDD are backed up to Synology NAS, RAID 5 DiskStation (4 x 4 TB disks) fully automatically by Cloud Station Backup 4 software (Synology). 4. Selected directories from Synology NAS are backed up to Amazon Glacier for added off-site security. I use fully automatic Glacier Backup app for Synology. This setup is fairly easy and automated. I do not have to copy directories from one storage device to another. Lightroom catalogue is also very simple. This method is good for photographers having photo archive less than 10 TB, which is maximum size of single HDD.
  9. Dear all, I have been a Lighthroom user for years and been satisfied with it even though nobody's perfect and some other are better in some aspects. The announcement from Adobe That they discontinue the standalone version (LR6) and promote only The CC version (be it "Classic" or not) looks like a "take it or leave" message ! On a pure economic standpoint, I fully understand their interest : getting a permanent subscription fee at a minimum of 144€ per year should make the shareholders happy ! But, considering my needs, I do not see a lot of advantages in switching to the CC. I understand the benefits of the cloud and the capacity to access to your pictures everywhere you are and with any type of device, but quite frankly I do not care. Having the full LR version downloaded on my PC and on another portable is quite enough for me and I am not dependent on any internet / WIFI connection to do my posttreatment. You also may argue on the security and the fact you can save your production on the Adobe cloud : fine, but having backups on several portable harddisks is sufficient for me, knowing that a lot of progress is made with those devices and you can find at least 2 Tbytes robust portable harddisks at a quite reasonable price. There are certainly other advantages to switch to CC ,speed (?), permanent releases...but at the risk to be extremely oldfashioned, i am quite happy with what I already have. Is there anyone sharing the same opinion or am I the only one ?

Shot raw in bright daylight and Lightroomed it into this version.
  11. When I take photos with both my old A7s, and my A7sii Adobe does this auto grading to the images after importing them into Lightroom (also into Photoshop). Normally the images are crushed by 1-2 stops, and contrast and saturation is added, ext. Settings: Raw, Large Files, 3:2 SLog-3 (but have tired different Picture Profiles on my A7s and still did the samething) I had an issue with it auto cropping the images, but switched it from 16:9, to 3:2 in camera and it was fixed. I'm hopping its some setting I'm over looking. Anyone know why it does this, and know how to turn it off? I feel like I'm spending time trying to get back-ish to neutral instead of just editing the image. Thanks!

  13. Hi, I just published a guide on how to add metadata to your images in Lightroom using a donation-ware plugin: LensTagger*. LensTagger, or: how to add metadata to images shot with legacy glass and/or on film Using the plugin itself is quite straightforward, the only pain is having to go through several Lightroom menus every time. But I've got a solution for that as well, at least if you're on a Mac. I wrote an Automator service that will let you invoke LensTagger with a simple shortcut of your own choice. For the details please read the blog post (it's straightforward, but you will have to follow the instructions). I don't have a standard Lightroom installation (i.e. my Lightroom app is not in the usual "Application" folder root), so I wasn't able to supply a ready-made file, but like I said is really a matter of copying and pasting & following my guide. And if you like the LensTagger plugin please remember to offer the guy who developed it (Dirk Essl) at least a beer *You can download the plugin at http://www.essl.de/wp/software/lenstagger-lightroom-plugin/
  14. (Cross Posted on various Forums) Hey All, I just wanted to post a quick note about today’s launch of Capture One Pro 8.2. Normally I don’t make a point of advertising ‘dot’ releases but we have added a very exciting new tool in Capture One. The Color Balance tool (whilst existing in previous versions of Capture One) has had an extensive upgrade. With the new 3-Way Color Balance, no knowledge of color blending or third party plug-ins are required to create beautifully color graded images. Color tone changes can be made in the shadows, the highlights or the mid-tones. Have a look at the attached screen grab (Photo credit www.petewebb.com), to give you an idea. This is a great way to apply color grading to an image without relying on presets and filters. Although a similar result can be achieved using levels and curves, it is not as easy to reach the desired tone, plus in the new tool, color is decoupled from lightness and saturation. There is a tutorial video here… And stand by for blog posts on the subject at blog.phaseone.com and a great webinar tomorrow with Pratik Naik from Solstice Retouch. Sign up here… https://attendee.got...817020592082433 Pratik will take us through his color workflow and make use of the new tool. There are more webinars in the future too where you can learn about this tool, and Capture One in general.. http://www.phaseone....-webinars.aspx 8.2 also adds ‘Dynamic Locations’ (new tokens for changing the path of an image file based on items such as color tag, star rating and much more), 5k Previews plus new camera and lens support. Give it a try out on a free 30 day trial… http://www.phaseone....ture-One-8.aspx Thanks, David
  15. Just got my A7II and discovered Lightroom doesn't read Sony's raw files. Are you guys all using capture one? I heard it's really buggy and crashes a lot, so I was hoping to avoid having to learn it. UPDATE: I have Lightroom 5.7 CC, but apparently there's a 5.7.1 version of Lightroom out now that supports the A7II. But my software is saying "no updates available"... I'll get to the bottom of this!
