  1. Hi all, I'm a long time reader / first time poster with a quick question about autofocus for video on the A7rii. This topic is covered a lot online, and I'm clear on how to use AFC with video (currently on wide). It works pretty well. The only issue is, often when you're shooting, you can't really see what the camera is focusing on until you review the footage on a larger screen. Peaking works of course, but only in manual focus mode. Sometimes face tracking does what I am saying, by drawing a while box around a face. Obviously if I hold down the shutter, I get a green box on what is in focus, but of course it's impossible to shoot like this. So the issue is, all of these are useless if I'm on AFC in video mode, and there isn't a face in the shot. It would be great if there was a way to turn on peaking in AFC, or if there was some display (green/white boxes) that existed in this mode... Am I missing something somewhere in the settings? Thanks!
  2. I recently attended jazz great Brian Culbertson's concert at the Lyman Center in New Haven, CT. Great show, lots of energy and funk at its finest. Shot this session with an A7rii in manual mode (auto ISO though) and used the new Sony 70-200 f2.8 G Master lens. 3. When I received my 85mm 1.4 GM last month, I was anxious to try out it's ability to use eye focus for a studio session. Thus, I contacted Olga, one of my favorite models to work with, and we did a session using colored wigs, movement and some typical headshots. This image is one from the color wigs grouping and it was shot with eye focus, continuous focus on a Sony A7rii body. Lighting was a 4 light setup using Broncolor lights and modifiers. Overall, I'm really happy with the 1.4 GM... Yes, it does make noise, yes it isn't the fastest focusing lens I've used but other than those minor draw backs, the imaging from it is stunning. Hopefully, you'll agree. (Note: this image was post processed in Photoshop CC)
  4. Hopefully this will be helpful for some of you who are planning to get the Commlite Canon to Sony AF adapter for the new bodies with Phase Detection. Me and my buddies were just curious about how well some of the Canon L Prime (plus the newer 40mm STM) will perform with the adapter, and we video captured the output and slapped them into a video. Not exactly a scientific comparison but does give an idea. Lenses: Canon EF 200mm f2.8 L ii Canon EF 135mm f2 L Canon EF 100 f2.8 macro L IS Canon EF 85mm f1.2 L ii Canon EF 40mm f2.8 STM Canon EF 24mm f1.4 L ii One thing I noticed is that the newer design lenses (2009 and later) seems to perform better on camera with phase detect, whereas the older ones perform better on contrast detect. Here is a quick one of just A6300 with just 85L ii, 40STM, 24L ii Thanks for checking it y'all
  5. Learning cureve with A7rii I am in autofocus single (AF-S, Flexible spot medium I am set up for back button focus. I am not sure how to move the focus point around. If I try to press on the wheel buttons to move the focus point, the functions I assigned to those buttons are enacted instead of moving the focus point. Also, there is a flashing group of symbls on the LCD: something that lloks like two parentheses, a hand, a camera and an explanation point. Have no idea what that means. Thanks in advance Steve
  6. Hi all I am a newbie in this forum and this is my first post. I am considering to buy the awesome Zeiss 135mm F/2 APO for my A7RII however I am not sure which mount (ZE or ZF.2) would be better. I have the Metabones IV adapter so the following would be pros and cons of each. I would like to hear the opinion of you all regarding this dilemma. ZE Mount Pros: ExiF data through the metabones adapter Full 5-Axis stabilisation through metabones (as it transfers the focal length and aperture information)---> I am not 100% sure on this better usability in studio with flash (s the aperture will stay open and close only for taking photo therefore the viewfinder will be nice and brighter Cons: Needs Metabones to change aperture Is only usable on Canon and Sony and due to lack of aperture ring and flange distance. Lower resale value due to #2 ZF.2 Mont Pros: Manual Aperture ring (Can work with cheap dump adapters) Works on any system with shorter flange distance (Nikon, Canon, Sony , Fuji, etc) Better resale value due to #2 potential autofocus with Techart Pro adapter (although its a bit heavy for it) Cons: No Exif 3-Axis stabilisation vs 5 axis. Dark view finder when used in studio I would really like to hear your options on this matter,
  7. Every time one takes a photograph, the picture is displayed on the monitor for about 5 seconds. Is there a way to limit this time to, say, three seconds? In the famously user-friendly menu I could not find an option to set the display time. What did I overlook? Kind regards, Freddy.
  8. Hi guys, I just got my A7RII recently and has been adapting a Leica 35 1/.4 lens I borrowed from a friend who don't use it much. I never knew manual focus can be so much fun. (tried my friend's leica lens on a leica body, not so enjoyable. now given the multiple interesting functions on A7RII requires a native FE lens, I'm now in the search for a new native e mount lens that I may take out together with my leica 35/1.4. I have been considering between FE 55/1.8 and Batis 85/1.8. Wonder what would be your recommendation. I think I might mostly be taking them during city strolls and travel, maybe some portrait infrequently. ultra wide angle can be assisted with my canon lenses (list at the end). my current thoughts: FE55: very light, fast AF, top notch IQ. all-rounded focal length, can do both street and portraits photography. but would I be able to somewhat replace it through cropping with leica 35? Batis 85: relatively more specialised lens for portraits and tight framed scenes. might be more difference from (and potentially a better match with) leica 35? I have tried Batis 85 in Sony show room (but only on A7s), its AF seems slow. (manual focus 35 is not that quick for me so ideal the other lens could focus quick enough for capturing precious instants) any other suggestions? 90 macro is a top notch lens and macro works can be fun, but would it worths for relatively limited amount of macro work? I also have canon 16-35/4 IS, 24-70/2.8 II, 70-200/4 IS, Sigma 35/1.4. But they are just way too big for A7RII and only used in very limited specific occasions, or used on canon body directly (no longer any weight saving after adding the adapter and the AF speed of canon lens on A7Rii is just acceptable, esp 70-200. this also makes buying sony zoom less an ideal options, unless I decide to sell all my canon gears I guess. Thanks a lot.
  9. Took my brand-new A7R2 to Mongolia and it died, luckily on the last day. The shutter began sticking, and while I could manually release it and shoot in silent mode, it definitely needed repair. I've sent it in to Sony's third-party repair house here in the USA, Precision Camera, with whom I have had only terrible experiences in the past. Here's hoping I get it back in time for my trip to the Amazon next week. So far, we're a week into the process, and all I get from them is that it's "in repair," although they have agreed to put a "rush" on the repair. Great. I'll update with any further developments. If Sony could improve the repair process, it would go a long way towards keeping their customers happy.
  10. Hello, I'm looking to start shooting real estate/ interiors with my A7RII. I bought this high res camera primarily for artsy exhibition print stuff, but now that I am rich in megapixels and not money, I am realizing that the files are perhaps overkill and a nuisance for fast turnaround , lowish-paying real estate stuff. I've read great stuff about the Sony 16-35 but can't afford it right now. I've played around with my Sigma 19mm APSC lens in crop mode and the A7Rii is getting nice results with those 18mp. I am considering two crop mode options: Sony 10-18 e-mount, and the inexpensive Canon EF-S 10-18 with an adapter. Looks like I can pick up the Sony for about $550, vs $350 for the canon+ fotodiox adapter. Does anyone have thoughts on how they two lenses might compare in terms of crop mode image quality on A7rII? Any alternate suggestions? Bonus question for anyone who uses both the 16-35 FE mount and the 35 2.8 FE mount: When stopped down and zoomed to 35mm, how does the 16-35 compare to the Sony 35 prime? Is it close? Thanks in advance!
  11. Hello, I just received my A7rii directly from the Sony store today. I had purchased an SDXC 128 UHS-I/U3. However, when I placed the card in the camera and changed the "File Format" to XAVC S 4K I get a message "To perform shooting with this setting, use a UHS-I U3 compatible memory card" My question is: Isn't the card I purchased that kind of card the camera requires to be able to shoot in 4K, etc? What is the conflict? The camera, type of card, a glitch, etc??? Could anyone explain? Thank you for your cooperation!
