  1. I have recently noticed an artifact appearing in the bottom center of my pictures. This only happens at smaller apertures F8 - F22. It is not dust as it forms almost a perfect 1/2 ring. I have swapped out lenses so it is not on the lens. I have done the self cleaning, as much as that does. I even looked at the sensor, I figured something this big would be visible, but the sensor appear clean. Given its size and shape I am not sure that a cleaning of the sensor would be helpful I have included 2 pictures. One is a blown up view of the artifact and the other is the full picture. You can see the artifact about 1/3 of the way in from the left and 1/3 of the way up from the bottom. The camera is still under warranty and I was looking for any advice before I have to pack it up and send it away for a few days or weeks depending on the speed Sony's warranty service. I would like any advice on how I should proceed. Thanks
  2. My view from a helicopter in Sedona, AZ. One of the most beautiful places on earth . Shot with Sony A7Rii, Rokinon 14mm.
  3. Is it just me or does that flashing steady shot indicator on the monitor / finder drive everyone nuts? I wouldn't mind too much if it was displayed right on the edge of the screen but it intrudes over the main image area, sometimes onto the forehead of a person in the image. I get why an inexperienced photographer might need such a warning but, all my photo life I've known to look at the shutter speed to see if handheld is doable. I know what shutter speed / focal length I can handhold. I don't need that warning, ever. Is there anyway of getting rid of it? I guess we can just hope that, one day, Sony puts a flag in the firmware: Steady Shot warning On/Off. Next A7Rii firmware upgrade. PLEASE! Regards Peter
  4. hello everyone, i need help with a very peculiar banding problem i have observed with my A7Rii. my lens is the e mount native sony zeiss 55mm f1.8. when shooting indoors, there often is a dark band clouding part of the picture taken. if i take stream of pictures in continuous mode or single shots one after the other, this is very visible. band is moving up and down sometimes clearing the whole picture, sometimes blocking it all, sometimes wider, narrower, denser... i suspected shutter frequency problems, like you would see when shooting a pc monitor but i think this is different. please take a look at my pictures, i downsized them considerably for ease of download. one single picture does not tell much but looking at them in series will tell the whole story. typically they were shot wide open and 1/250 but the results are not any different at f8 either. changing the iso does make a difference either. i tried shooting with a sony rx10 and did not experience similar problems. here are my links: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/qkq2mlh46d1p3vr/AADU5mjRcQoZZ4NTZu6--Y0Sa?dl=0 https://www.dropbox.com/sh/kc1sfitf5836n1a/AAAHT0KMOuC5fnT3CVEy0MEHa?dl=0 https://www.dropbox.com/sh/uisyja5zp74ymuf/AAAsz-k-pJMIs1F74rC8Utwna?dl=0 attached the files on the first link directly:

  6. Hello, Here's the link of my review of the Sony A7R2, with plenty of my favorite photographs. I am hoping you guys will love the images. Feel free to share via social media! http://www.atamadnan.com/2017/03/23/sony-a7r2-review-a-stellar-workhorse/
  7. As the subject line suggest, I just bought a really lightly used A7Rii, only ~750 actuations. It's on firmware 1.00. I already have another A7Rii on FW 4.00 so I know that benefits of the new firmware versions include things like uncompressed RAW, Focus Standard, and Set File Name but it would also introduce the "star eater" issue and cause zoom lenses to focus stopped down. Are there any other reason I should or shouldn't upgrade the FW?

  10. Hello, I've am using back button AF feature on my Sony A7Rii. I really like it, except that my remote (SONY RM-VPR1) triggers AF every time I press the remote. Is there a way to turn it off? Because it's really annoying that my Sony A7Rii is re-focusing every single time I use my remote. When I shoot a static object for more than one photo, I us the following steps: 1. I put my Sony A7Rii on a tripod 2. I use back-button-focus AF to focus 3. I use the SONY RM-VPR1-remote-trigger to shoot. The PROBLEM is that the Sony A7Rii re-focuses in step #3 every time when I use the remote. Thanks in advance for your help ... :-) Mike H.
  11. Hello Everyone, I'm hoping someone can solve my dilemma regarding a ton of noise in my video. I have tried to shoot in both FF and S35 mode. I'm moving a portion of my business into videography and looked at the A7Rii as being a great balance to continue 75% photography and 25% video capabilities. I typically shoot photography in full manual, but when required will shift into Shutter Priority mode or Aperture Priority mode when the situation requires. Yesterday, I tried to shoot a video of my home and to ensure I had enough light coming in throughout the home, I turned on every pot light I have. My camera settings, 1/50s shutter, aperture F4, ISO800, shutter priority, +1 exposure compensation PP7(Slog2) tried both FF and S35. Brought the video into Final Cut Pro X and could start seeing noise immediately. Reshot several times raising Exposure Compensation to +2 and tried ISO through to 3200. It just got worse. The amount of noise was crazy. I know that everyone will say to get faster glass, but when there are limited native options, and I'm not prepared to buy canon glass and an adapter as someone at my camera supplier recommended. I need to solve this before even looking at this option. If anyone can make some recommendations, I would be grateful. Thanks, Robert
  12. Domain House is a grand neo-Gothic sandstone landmark built in 1848-49. It represents an important part of early colonial education as it originally began its life as the High School Of Hobart Town - http://ontheconvicttrail.blogspot.com.au/2013/03/domain-house-high-school-of-hobart-town.html Domain House reminds me of the magnificent Mount Stuart House http://www.mountstuart.com/files/cache/36817598586a76409ea95686b437f057.jpg I was fortunate to attend the Australian Institute of Architects Hobart Open House opening 2015. These shots were taken at the event. This is a building owned by my current employer the University of Tasmania.
  13. Straight out of the camera with "Landscape" preset, no further edits. I did use a polarizer.
  14. I am an hobbyist photographer and I tend to avoid shooting people. This is my first portrait photograph that I am reasonably happy with. I got this shot during a workshop to learn more about lighting. It was bright daylight with the sun behind the model and a (very high power) strobe to fill her face.
  15. I have had the A7Rii since the start of August and it has been really fantastic... but in the last 3-4 days it has started to malfunction when using continuous shooting. This happened first after about 1 hour of following a Eurasian Pygmy Owl the other day, the camera stopped in the middle of a 5 frame burst and said "camera error, please power the camera off and on again". I did so and the camera worked again for 20 minutes before the problem repeated... and this time power cycling did not help, game over for the day. A few hours later it was functioning again. Today saw a repeat of the situation, but this time it happened immediately when I tried to shoot continuously (it was fine before and after when shooting single frames) On both occasions the temperature was below zero, the first time it was -3C, the second time -8C. So... I am wondering if my camera is broken... or if it is just too cold for it. Has anyone else used the A7Rii with continuous shooting in sub-zero temperatures for any length of time? Andy
  16. Ever since I had decided a while back that I was just going to shoot Fuji and Sony, I made the move to dump most of my Canon stuff (which was a pretty extensive collection). I successfully dumped about 12 lenses once I realized the A7R2 was the real deal and that it would work for me. Since then, I have bought the 28/2 and the 35/1.4 FE lenses. The 28 is compact, and renders nicely enough that it comes in very handy. The 35 was an inconsistent dog which was returned after a week of frustration (magical at the one thing it did well though which was centered subjects at close distances wide open). Since returning the 35, I have gone into a mode where I'm furiously looking for glass to put in front of this amazing sensor. I came to the point this morning where upon receiving my most recent purchase (Sigma 20mm 1.4 Art) that I have no completely bought back into a Canon glass system. I have since rebought (and resold) the 50L, rebought 85L2, Sigma 20mm and 50mm Art, and the Canon 200mm F2.0 IS all within the last two months. Adapting glass is not a perfect solution which is why I was hoping to buy into Sony completely. But seeing as my first experience with one of their expensive primes was complete shite, I was pushed back in the other direction to look for a fix for right meow. By my estimates, I've spent over 8k on Canon EF mount lenses recently while no longer owning a Canon EF mount body. This, to me is indicative of a major issue with Sony's ability to produce a line of impressive, consistent, and alluring lenses at comparable/acceptable prices. If they did have a solid line of lenses that I could trust, the cheese I just spent would all be in Sony's pocket already. I have owned a multitude of lenses in a multitude of different systems and the FE 35/1.4 was the first lens I've ever gotten that exhibited a blaring problem immediately upon mounting and shooting. This, combined with the subsequent reading I have done from lensrentals etc do not instill the confidence necessary for me to feel comfortable sending 1-3k to Sony for any lens right now. Go ahead and flame me if you want. But know that I would love for Sony to succeed and become a true contender as I have appreciated every bit of their innovation these past few years. Rant over. lol.
  17. Hey all, I'm a first time submitter, but long time obsessive reader. Love this site! I decided to put together a video to practice editing in 4K and see what this camera can do. I present, the Sony A7Rii box unboxing IN 4K (if you are into that sort of thing). Filmed with whatever camera I found closest to the box motion control system is Edelkrone Sliderplus (with action and target modules) Lit with two LED panels Lenses used are 90mm macro and 55mm F1.8, all in camera 4K at 100Mb, edited in Premiere Pro https://youtu.be/29BiYaKkMDM Let me know what you think! Cheers!
  18. This is my first post as i am new to the forums. Here are some of the first images i have taken with the new A7RM2. This is hands down one of the best cameras i have ever owned and I have been a loyal canon customer with tons of gear for years!! I did some processing in lightroom and used the Sony 55mm 1.8 lens for all the shots. https://flic.kr/p/xan7Sc https://flic.kr/p/xpxqQQ https://flic.kr/p/xrRW8t https://flic.kr/p/xrRWb4 https://flic.kr/p/wuZDrz https://flic.kr/p/wuRcMA https://flic.kr/p/xafqyC
  19. Three weeks without a proper camera and I was pretty lost. Yesterday the A7RII arrived and the key question is was it worth the wait? After shooting this morning as I do before dawn in low light at high ISOs, getting home uploading the images into Lightroom - at first I was pretty dismayed. There did seem to be more noise. Then my brain kicked into reason - I don't normally shoot at high ISO's and these were deliberately taken at 640 - 1250 to see what the latest fuss was about on the web. Now, having uploaded them to my site and evaluated the end-result I am happy. Three jumps forward - one sideways step is how I sum it up. 1. Focus IS better - until you hit low light or the long zoom on a telephoto. 2. Stabilisation has been achieved - it's in camera and that is a huge advantage. I shot handheld at 1/6th. 3. 4k is worth the $4k. The video features are fantastic - and they are in-camera. 4. Noise at high ISOs is about the same as the A7R to my eye. The last point is a sideways step in my opinion and yes I think the pre-release hype from Sony was to make much of the camera's weakest point. It does have high ISO noise - despite the new design. NOTE: I did not have long exposure NR on - which I always did on the A7R and maybe when I set that to ON - my results will be better. I was just hoping to do away with that as it makes long exposures - so slow. Here are my initial shots: Pacific Basin - shot at 160mm in low light, auto-focus with the LA-EA3 and Sony 70 - 400mm, hand held at 1/10th and ISO 1250. Walking the dog: shot handheld at 1/6th Slippin' into silk: 30 seconds at ISO 640. All have been sharpened and had noise reduction applied - this is a normal part of my workflow and I have applied it so I can compare to my 5D3 and A7R images.
  20. Hello everyone, I've just had an idea that we can collect the information of adapter performances on A7Rii and make a report like the table below, so everybody can take it as the reference. So basically we need the help of SAR readers owning A7Rii and a native camera body to estimate the performance of a non-native lens on A7Rii through an adapter. I can collect these information and calculate the average value to put into the below table and share to the public (Google drive sheet). This value doesn't need to be very accurate, though, since we can't standardize all the tests and the judgement is highly dependent on the testers, but it will give an ideal of how a specific lens works with a specific adapter. An estimated value without directly compare to the native body may be acceptable since there are people having only A7Rii. In this case I will use the notice column to mention that fact. How do you think about that idea? Should we start?
  21. Its been pretty wintery in Hobart recently - coldest winter in over 65 years. So I have not been out enough. Today was better so I ventured out for a shot in the harbour. 22. Since the 1970s, I have used Hasselblad medium format cameras. For the last 40 years, I have only owned 3 main cameras, well over a decade each. I made the switch to digital (and scanned thousands of my film trannies) when the CFV digital back was launched for the V series cameras. As my eyes aged, I switched to H series for the auto-focus and have shot a Hasselblad H4D-50 for the last 8 or 9 years. I am a quality freak - but not a pixel-peeper. But I recently realised that I am tired of lugging around such a heavy camera. For long walking trips, I have limited myself to carrying two prime lenses, which means a lot of lens swapping, awkward with a backpack. I have left the 'blad at home or in the hotel room on too many occasions lately. When I saw that the new Sony A7R Mark II shoots 42 Mpx 14 bit images, I thought it might make a "reasonable compromise" replacement for the 50Mpx Hasselblad. The Sony A7R Mark II is much, much, smaller and lighter. I can carry an easy-access camera bag, instead of a heavy backpack. I won't be as worried about theft, damage or rain as I am with the Ha$$alblad. The A7RII camera specs look good. Except, maybe, for the lossy compression on RAW files: which (a) may be changed in a firmware update and ( appears in shots that are heavily pushed in post. Which should not be too much concern for me, as decades of shooting 12 shot rolls of transparency film taught me to get it right before pressing the button. Some of the early sample shots from the A7Rii look great. Of course I don't know if the A7RII's 4.5 micron pixel pitch will capture light as beautifully as the larger pixel pitch on the big sensor of the Hasselblad. But, it'll be interesting to see whether the new Sony back-lit CMOS sensor can do better than the older Kodak CCD sensor for low-light low-noise capture. Will the A7RII's colour gamut be as pleasing as the 'blad? How will the lens range compare to the Fujinon Hasselblad lenses? So I've got an A7RII on pre-order from Amazon. I've bought the 16-35mm and the 24-70mm zoom and ordered the Zeiss Batia 85mm. I have bought the Sony E mount / Hasselblad V lens adapter to see if this system can bring my favourite lens, a Hasselblad Zeiss Planar FE 110mm f2, back to life - the best portrait / bokeh lens I have ever used. I plan to put the A7RII system quickly through its paces and make a judgement call. If it does not satisfy my appetite for quality, I'll quickly sell it while it's still a sought-after item. But, if the Sony A7RII is good enough, my H4D could end up at the back of my dehumidifying cabinet... Regards Peter PS. You can see some of my work at http://www.peterwalker.com
