I figured it out. The button was not releasing the metal pawl that causes the foot to lock onto the collar. I took a small awl, and pushed on the spring, relieving tension and allow the foot to be removed.

Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum. I just purchased the mentioned lens two days ago and following all the instructions I cannot remove the tripod foot. It is sturdy and functions as a handle nicely. When I loosen the collar-locking knob I can wiggle the tripod collar easily, but I push in the button and attempt to pull in the direction indicated in the manual and it will not come off. I've seen a few videos where it is shown being removed and it looks fairly basic. I have not tried to force it too much in fear of breaking something. I called Sony and they said I can mail it in for free repair, but I'd rather avoid that if anyone knows a fix. Thanks in advance
