Golem
What adapter goes for $300 ? I'm using the MetaBones ... for only $100, top quality. Before that one I was using a borrowed "Fotasy", a $25 item, with clunky latching mechanism, aluminum rear flange, kinda tight front [chrome/brass] flange, but it was built planar true to the sensor plane [critical focus test, fast WA] and is correct for infinity focus [fast WA test again]. The Fotasy is apparently a step up from even cheaper stuff that is often reported to be out-of-plane to the sensor etc etc. Thus it's a perfectly good adapter for getting your feet wet. The MetaBones is correctly aligned, excellent chrome/ brass for both flanges, a really good latch, and the tripod fitting by itself can easily justify the $75 over the Fotasy, which has none. Interested to know what, if any, miracle is included in a $300 adapter. I use nothing but old F-mount lenses on my A7M2, so I'm not joking. If I'd get a serious advantage, for $300, I'd consider doing it. `
foto-fanatic
Hi Neil and welcome too, i used a nikon film era 70-210mm on a7m2 with no problems with a cheap ebay fotodiox 16$ adapter and got results, however, i stepped up to a metabones which Golem rightly implied is better built with finer tolerances and better machining and also has the tripod mount, i think you will find apart from possible physical handling disparities long zooms will work great on a7x with any reasonable adapter and even better with more finely crafted adapters such as the metabones etc.. I did notice some fringing at f4 on the nikon lens, but not abhorrent nor aesthetically abominable, certainly not hideous.
Snowfun
What adapter goes for $300 ? ` The metabones speed booster is around that figure isn't it? Adds a stop (I think - I've not used one as I prefer Novoflex) so there is some advantage. Tim

When you put a SpeedBooster on a FF lens, you do gain a stop, but you render the lens into APS-C territory as to format coverage. The purpose of such devices is to restore the original field of view when using a FF lens on an APS-C body/sensor. They could be functionally described as being the reverse devices as the tele-extenders [shrink image size but gain lens speed]. `
