Canon 6D to A6000?

Recommended Posts

I'm not a working pro rather just a guy who takes photos while on vacation. I have a lot of money in my canon gear (6d, 16-35 f4, 24-105 f4 and 70-200 f4 IS). I just got back from my trip to iceland and after hiking with all that gear I really want to switch to a mirrorless system. Has anyone made the jump from full frame back to APC-C with the a6000? Would it be crazy to do that? Should I just got with an A7 (though I'm not saving a ton of weight)?

I've been reading the rumor sites and there looks to be a nex 7 replacement coming soon (A6100/A7000) and the only reason I'd be tempted for that over the a6000 is weather sealing.

I've been using the a6000 for over a year along, with an older Sony NEX6 and which I would like to replace .  I think the a6000 is an excellent camera and I would buy another except that I too am waiting to see for the a6100 (or whatever it will be called).

For many years I used Canon gear and got very tired of lugging it around.  The a6000 does a acceptable job up to 1600 ISO, and up to 400 ISO it can be blown up to 13x19 with little problem.  In all the years I've been a pretty serious photographer, I never owned a weatherproof camera and I've never had a problem, though I've been very careful with them.  The a6100 is tempting because it's rumored to be faster focusing than the a6000 and will probably have updated firmware, and of course the weatherproofing.

Good luck.

I made a similar jump in 2011, ending up with the nex-5, nex-6 & nex-7, plus all the 'high-end' zeiss lenses. Portable, yes, but in the end I got too frustrated by poor ergonomics, the limited range of mostly non-stellar lenses and dreadful support by Sony. I'm now a very, very happy M4/3 user, with the E-M1 and the stunningly good Oly pro lenses.

There's not much a FF sensor provides

that you can't get from an APS sensor.

What comprises that "not much" depends

on how you work and what is your output.

Especially since the 33% smaller sensor

is in a Sony and the 50% larger one is in

a Canon, the smaller sensor is up to the

job. The noise level and noise type of my

Sonys is preferable to that of my Canons.

--------------------------------------

OK, so much for the sensor size and IQ

part of the swap. Features and accessory

range are quite different, with vastly more

chatchkes available for Canons, so you

hafta be really sure that you're not losing

anything that you absolutely cannot live

without.

For instintz, as soon as I had typed the

phrase "absolutely cannot live without",

I initially thought that myself, the grumpy

old-school dude, truly could not imagine

even a single feature or chatchke that fit

that description. Well, I halfways kinda

sorta did find something: I can easily live

without AF, but if I'm gonna use it at all,

it's absolutely gotta be back-button AF !

My belief is that if even I can ALMOST

find something semi-semi-indispensable,

then you really need to ask yourself that

same question, and make sure your new

gear will provide it. There's likely to be

compromises in lightening your baggage,

so make a SHORT list of what CANNOT

in any way be compromised. Everything

else is "on the table".
