So I've been wondering about this for a while now, which 70-200 lens to get for my a6500.

i would use it primarily for surfing photography & video, then secondarily for landscapes etc.

sony 70-200 f2.8 is out of the question at this time, as it is too expensive.

so my dilemma is, do i get a sigma/tamron 2.8 or go for the better AF option but smaller aperture in the sony 70-200 f4? all three models are similarly priced so it's only down to the aperture at this point.

thoughts?

Can only speak from my use of the Sony 70-200 f4.  It is a wonderful lens and if purchased used can be had for a very reasonable price (I believe I paid $800 on Craigslist, Ebay around $900.  Since what you describe as shooting use, the F4 should be more than fast enough and you will appreciate the light weight of this lens.  It is one of my "never get rid of lenses" (at the moment!) along with Zeiss 35mm 2.8, 50mm 1.4, and 24-70 2.8.  In summary in my hands, easy to hold, fast focusing, and, most importantly to me, razor sharp.
