Field of view with FE on APS-C body

Recommended Posts

This is a pretty basic question, but I'm having trouble finding a simple answer. What field of view, in terms of an APS-C lens, can I expect if I put an FE lens on an a6000 camera?\

For example, if I shoot with the E 55-210 APS-C telephoto at a focal length of 200, and then change to the FE 70-300, and again shoot with the focal length set at 200 on the lens, will the shot with the FE appear more zoomed in (as if it was 300 on the APS-C lens)? Or will the framing be basically the same with both?

I have an a6000 and the 55-210 which came as a double kit lens. It's doing the job for me for now, and I'm in no hurry, but I can imagine wanting to upgrade to a different telephoto zoom later in the future, and the upgrade path seems to be only FE.

Thanks.

Great, thanks! That makes perfect sense.

With my old a77 I had a 55-300 and sometimes I find the E 55-210 reach a bit short. On the other hand, for its size and weight no complaints.

FE zooms aren't cheap but the entry level models like the FE 24-240 or FE 70-300 would seem to be the best upgrade path for an a6xxx body.

The A6000 is sharper than the A77 (Mk I that is. Mk II is equivalent). That means you can probably crop images to get a closer view.

The crop factor equivalence has a bit more to it, but on the same camera an FE lens will give you the same field of view as an E lens at the same focal length.
