Lens to get started

Hey all,

Greetings from a new member here :)

I am just planning to start out the videography and I have ordered my a6500 which is on its way. However, i am very much confused on which lenses to adopt. I thought i would not buy a kit lens because i’v read it is not a great lens.. I want to get some basic/ not so expensive lens because my budget is very limited (200-$300) and i’m broke after buying a body.

I was thinking if i should get a adapter that could mount a cannon or sigma lens and buy a cheap canon 50mm lens..

What do you guys think of this combo or can you guys please recommend me some other great options??

I am totally new to this field and have very little idea so hope you would help me choose the best without breaking the bank..

I’m planning to shoot mostly videos...

Thanks a lot in advance

One option would be to consider one of the Sigma primes...I have the little 19mm 2.8, and 30 and 60mm are made in E mount.   The 19mm is available used from Ebay well within or below your budget ($125 or so).  Adapting lenses often results in auto focus issues unless you plan to shoot manual focus.  And the "smart" adapters are expensive too.  (Metabones around $400).  I personally think you would be best served with native primes.  Quality autofocus zooms will be out of your budget, but perhaps you should also consider the Sony 18-55 "kit" lens which is reported to be a surprisingly good little zoom and available used at a surprisingly low price (around $100).  If you purchase one of the kit zooms, you can always resell it with only a few dollars loss should you not like its performance.

Hey, thanks for your reply Tinplater..

I was wondering if i should get an adapter for 100-$150(not metabones for now as it is too expensive) and a cannon 50mm lens..

Can you tell me how well will it work?

Thanks again.

I personally wouldn't use this strategy.  The 50mm lens is not the most versatile lens and would be the equivalent of approximately a 75mm lens on the cropped sensor.  Instead I again would take a serious look at the Sigma 19 or 30mm lenses.  Inexpensive and you don't need the expense of the adapter.  And with these inexpensive lenses, you can always resell if they don't meet your needs and you only risk to lose a few dollars.  I have purchased all my equipment used and have saved thousands of dollars over the years without issue.

What I read here is a confession that you have neglected to

search the existing threads for any answers. It is in your best

interest to do so ..... or don't be crying, "Nobody warned me".

While waiting for your 6500 body to arrive, do due dilligence.

You're welcome :-)

I have searched on a goolge and youtube thats why i thought of not getting the Kit lens and to try some alternatives as i have a limited budget.

I wanted to know what the advanced users have to say about this. It's not that i neglected to search the threads..

I have researched for more than a month now but had some questions so asked. Instead of commenting that is not so useful, it would be great if you had given me some of your thoughts based on your experience if you had some and not wasting your precious time. :)

Thanks..

I suggest the Sony E 35mm f1.8.

It has good IQ and works very well with hybrid AF-C, which is important for A6x00.

Also, 35mm is almost equivalent to a standard 50mm lens on FF. This means it works for both wide and close shots, even portraits.

If portraits is all you do, the Sony E 50mm f1.8 would be better, but the 35mm is more all round.

It should be within your budget.

If you by videography mean full manual focusing, you should be looking at a manual vintage lens and a dumb adapter. There are lots of options and you should research the kind of IQ you want.

In consideration of your reaction, I will wholeheartedly recommend

that you base your outfit around the use of Canon_EF-to-Sony_E

adaptation. Based on my personal experiences, and on the widely

reported experiences of many others, I happily anticipate hearing

of your results. Go for it !

I am getting Sigma 35mm.

Hope this works for you...you will need to purchase an adapter $$$$ ( and my experience with Sigma Canon mount converted to e mount resulted in slow auto focus and a very noisy auto focus motor.  I personally feel you would do better with the Sigma 30mm e mount lens (which costs less than an adapter!).  But hopefully your choice works best for you.  Let us know.
