Just bought a lightly used A7Rii, still on FW 1.00, is there any reason I shouldn't upgrade the FW?

Recommended Posts

As the subject line suggest, I just bought a really lightly used A7Rii, only ~750 actuations. It's on firmware 1.00. I already have another A7Rii on FW 4.00 so I know that benefits of the new firmware versions include things like uncompressed RAW, Focus Standard, and Set File Name but it would also introduce the "star eater" issue and cause zoom lenses to focus stopped down.

Are there any other reason I should or shouldn't upgrade the FW?

I wouldn't. Tailor your camera selection to the intended shoot. If you do choose to upgrade, I'd put the word out that you have a 'non-eater' Rii you'd swap for a version 4.0 Rii plus additional cash for your pockets. I'm sure there's some Rii astronomy shooters kicking themselves that they updated their firmware and would like to have your 1.0 find. The value / significance of having a firmware 1.0 Rii vanishes IF or WHEN (Tick. Tick Tick. Crickets.) Sony corrects the eater issue.
