Recommendation on a lens | A6500

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

I currently have a Sony A6500 + 18-105mm lens (https://www.amazon.com/Sony-SELP18105G-PZ-18-105mm-OSS/dp/B00ENZRQH8/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1506113515&sr=8-4&keywords=a6500+lens)

I want to take some close up videos of my bike, do some cinematic shots, etc. Like this: https://youtu.be/dnyXFN4Y3L0?t=46s

What would be the best lens for the job with my camera? I was thinking about the 35mm, f1.8 https://www.amazon.com/Sony-SEL35F18-35mm-Prime-Fixed/dp/B0096W1P5W/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1506113515&sr=8-5&keywords=a6500+lens

I typically will stand between 5-10 feet of my bike, with a few very close 1-3 feet away.

Thank you!!

What's wrong with using the 18-105mm lens that you already have?  It would cover your needs very well.  I also have and use the 35mm F1.8 that you mention and it's main advantage over the 18-105 is that it is better in low light.  Since most of your use will be outdoors, I'd stick with the 18-105.  It gets excellent reviews.

The shots have two main components: slide and bokeh. So the main thing is to get a slide or steadycam system. With regard to the bokeh, it may be tricky to achieve with f4 at the distances you have to be. I suggest you try it to see if you can get enough blur. Otherwise, the 35/1.8 will give you more bokeh and it's also a very nice general purpose prime.
