Sony A500 - Removing Bokeh

Hello. I currently am using the Sony A500. I've had the camera for two years now and I love it. However, i was wondering if there is a way to have the camera automatically remove the bokeh, or blurriness in the background of photos in Intelligent Mode. For example, whenever i take portrait type photos where i'm in the foreground, and there is some landmark in the background (i.e. the golden gate bridge, the eifel tower), the object in the background is always blurred.

I know that for some, the bokeh effect is desired, however, i want the background clear.  When trying to take the same photo with my girlfriends Canon T3i, the canon camera does not automatically blur the background of the photo as the A5000 does.

I want to be able to have the camera automatically take photos without blurring the background. For example if i take a portrait pic in front of the golden gate bridge, I want both the foreground and background to be clear, and not blurred  I've read in some places that the aperture has to be adjusted, but if thats the case, why does the canon "automatically" keep the background clear? Is there any way to adjust the camera to do this automatically?

Would appreciate any help on this as i've been trying to figure this out for the past 2 years.

I'm just an amateur user who likes to take travel photos. I have not taken dslr classes. I just want the camera to be able to take good quality photos without the bokeh

Thanks

I don’t want to appear condescending, but can I suggest that you take a little time to study the relationship between depth of field, aperture and focal length. Perhaps do a search in YouTube and take a look at any one of many tutorial videos that are there. Good luck.

If u shoot in auto mode u won't be able to control anything. As the previous post I recommend u to check how to use in manual mode or at least in semi auto modes like aperture priority mode. That will help u more. Good luck

Different cameras prioritise different things in auto settings. Your camera is probably right to prioritise a shallow depth of field, as that is what most people want when shooting portraits.

You can easily override this with manual settings. Go to A mode and set aperture high, say around f9. Then stand a few meters away from your girlfriend and zoom and focus. Zoom out if you're closer and zoom in if you're further away. Test which works best with your lens. That should give a sharper background.

That would give a sharper background for sure.

OK. There's "sharper" and then "sharpest".  So

also try out the S-mode. Just set the minimum

speed suitable for your personal steadiness at

using whatever FL lens you chose. This forces

the camera to use the smallest possible f-stop

for the lighting on the scene.

If you insist on using an automatic mode, try switching to landscape instead of portrait. Landscape mode should use a smaller aperture for a wider depth of field, which would reduce the blur in the background.

I agree with others that to take consistently good photos you need to understand the basics of exposure and aperture settings and how they affect your images. Even if you continue to use automatic modes, you should review what settings the camera chose for your photos and decide if it made the best choice to capture the image you desired. If it didn’t, make adjustments and reshoot.
