A7S (1) or A6500 as second camera

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I currently own an A7S ii and primarily use it for shooting weddings and other events (some of which are outdoors at night so I go up to 25,600 iso sometimes). I'm looking for a second camera that I can use on my gimbal and tripod during ceremony etc.. and to replace my A7sii if it fails. Both the A6500 and the A7s fall within my budget and I generally shoot in 1080p (although I use 4K on my A7sii sometimes to be able to crop in during post). Been reading a lot about the two and each option has its pro's and con's. Unfortunately I cannot wait for new models as I need the camera for a wedding I'm shooting solo in 3 weeks.

What would be your suggestions?

Thanks!

Ernest

Could depend on possible other uses for the second body.

If it's strictly video, and if  you have a cage or other reason

to prefer a similar body, get the 7S. But if it will see use for

general photo, or maybe stills at your weddings, the totally

silent shutter of the 6500 plus IBIS should prove useful. If

it is gonna handle some general photo use, you'll also get

24MP with the 6500. One needn't be the least bit of a pixel

peeping geek to find 24MP advantageous over 12MP with

routine still camera applications destined for hard copy. i'd

say it all depends on whether it's mainly a dedicated video

body or a multi-use body, and that these are very polarized

concerns. IOW, 7S for video-only, 6500 for anything else,

and no "grey area" in that choice. Even 25% general use

speaks strongly for the 6500 ... after all, it's not the primary

unit on the video side.
