Fast target running straight towards camera/burst mode.

Recommended Posts

Scenario: Fast moving target running straight towards the camera.

Equipment: Sony A6000 + Sigma 30mm f/1.4 + Sigma 60mm f/2.8 + Sony 50mm f/1.8

Settings: Tried everything I can think of.

So I love taking action shots of my dog, and friends dogs. I had both Sigma primes, and although the Sony has a very fast burst mode an supposedly very quick autofocus and focus tracking I usually only get the first shot of the sequence in focus. I read that only the Sony lenses take full advantage of the super fast hybrid focussing so got the Sony 50mm and still have the same problem. I've tried all combinations of settings, shutter speed, aperture, ISO, focus tracking etc but the problem remains that unless I refocus only the first shot will be in focus and I rarely have time to refocus with the target approaching fast directly towards me.

Am I expecting too much, is a target running straight towards the camera a notoriously hard thing for the camera to track focus on? Or am I missing something obvious?

IIRC [do I?] super fast hybrid AF is not in the

6000 but started with the 6300 which quickly

became the 6500. The 6000 was introduced

as having the world's fastest AF, but not as

also having the greatest of tracking ability ...

which [iIRC] was the additional claim of how

significant an upgrade the 6300 represented.

OTOH I am a bit  puzzled, cuz straight-on is

spozed to be LESS challenging than across

the frame, cuz the system doesn't ever hafta

figger out which AF point to switch over to.

A single AF point just keeps on keeping on.

The A6000 was the first camera to include Sony's super fast hybrid AF as far as I know. I think the later versions of the camera (A6300/A6500) just include more focus points, but I could be wrong.
