A7RII with FL-190 flash issue - results in dark pictures

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I appreciate all the useful information posted. I'm new to the DSLR and Sony mirrorless world.

I have an A6300 and A7RII which I am attempting to learn DSLR style photography after years of point and shoot autos.

It's a bit overwhelming with all the options, but I am impressed with the results I've seen posted.

My issue is this:  When shooting in TTL mode with the FL-190 code7267 flash for Sony with the A7RII the flash goes off, but the picture is dark, much darker than without the flash, unless put into SLOW Flash mode?  However, when shooting with the same flash attached to the Sony A6300 it works great.  I'm definitely confused and frustrated after experimenting with every setting I could find on the flash and the camera including turning off redeye and af illuminator. When I slow the shutter down below 1/5 the subject area which is about 5 feet away lightens up a bit, with a florescent tint.  However, the picture without the flash is much brighter and without the light orange tint. Anotherwords, the flash doesn't seem to be lighting up anything, just adding a mild orange tint?

Best Regards,

Are you sure you don't have "flash comp" set to a negative value on the A7RII?  Also set to "fill flash".  The difference in "tint" of your images reflects what light source was used to set white balance.  The flash will be cool white (daylight simulation), ambient light, if tungsten will be "warm".  Fluro is awful.  I would carefully go through the menus of the two cameras, side by side, and make sure you duplicate the A6300 on the A7r II.

I don't see any sign of flash light in the top picture. Therefore, the flash isn't firing while the shutter is open. I've had similar issues occasionally witn Sony OEM flashes. What I usually do is reseat and restart the camera and flash. For persistent problems I've reset the camera settings and that normally solves it. In my case, the settings were correct but it wouldn't work anyway.
