Canon user moving to Sony a7rii, need some lens direction

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

Just about to make the shift to the A7rii camera. I have a few canon lenses I was going to keep for the new sony body, but need to get one new all round lens, and am still deciding which way to go.

Would love some feedback from people who already have a7rii's and if so what canon/sigma lenses they use and are happy with.

I am pretty much settles on the 24-70 f2.8 as the size lens I will get, but need to decide on Canon, sigma, Sony (too expensive I think), and then which adapter to go for, Metabones V, or Fotodiox.

By the sound of it to be able to use the Sony a7rii IBIS with any Image stabilised lenses, I need the new metabones adapter with the IS on/off switch? is that correct? has anyone got the OS sigma 24-70 2.8 art and a a7rii?

Just after some real world info from anyone with a a7rii really.

thanks!

Darren

Maybe not much help, but I'm using all adaplted lenses on my a7rii. I use the Metabones V adapter for my Canon EF lenses. It came with v.57 firmware already installed. The adapter works fine for what I'm doing with the Sony body, which is primarily landscape and nature/wildlife. BIF isn't really my interest, but if that's what I want, I switch to my Canon body. I use a tripod pretty much exclusively, except for more casual photography, so IS, or IBIS, isn't something I use much, but it does work well. The Metabones adaptors also have an Arca Swiss style tripod foot, that works well with my tripod. I prefer to use it rather than having the body support the lens. Autofocus is useable, but for anything that is moving fast, I use a Canon body. A native Sony lens will work much better for action photography on the Sony body. Canon lenses I am using are 17-40/4L, 24-70/2.8L v2, 70-200/2.8L IS, 100-400L IS, and an 85/1.8. They all autofocus, the 100-400 does hunt more than the others in lower light/low contrast conditions. I'm happy enough with my current lenses, that its not likely I will persue replacing them with Sony glass.

I also use the Metabones FD to E mount for my FD lenses. I really bought the Sony to be a digital back for my FD lenses. The Sony has given them a new life.

I'm also thinking of switching and I was wondering how lens adaptors like metabones are effecting the battery life of the camera. Who has experience in this? Does using a Canon lens with an adaptor use more battery than a native Sony lens? Thanks a lot.

Last battery usage was 331 photos, using mostly canon 100-400l, using auto focus about half the time

I would not expect any difference. I'm using a

non-Metabones smart adapter and it seems

to eat batteries only as fast as usual. This is

despite the fact that if ANY adapter SHOULD

be hungrier than others, it ought to be mine,

cuz it has a motor to drive Maxxum AF lenses

and a servo to mechanically stop them down.
